Opening weekend!

The cycling season 2025 has started finally. While Stenberg got close to the Omloop podium, Cantagalli won KBK.

It's March and it's great again. Who cares about those Australian and Arabian pre-season races. It's spring classics time! And the opening weekend with Omloop Het Nieuwsblaad and Kuurne Brussels Kuurne (KBK) started well for Team FL (it rhymes!). During other years, the Team FL roster has been tailored exactly for this part of the year: strong hill riders, a good pavé crew, helpers who were able to control a race. But his year, it's different. This year, Team FL embraces the underdog role, although a few selected race might fith the team well. Like KBK. But the weekend started with Omloop, so that's where we begin too.

With no distinct pavé specialist, and tactical genius Hugo Marxer gone (who knows what happened to him, even the Liechtenstein intelligence service is cluesless), new appointed technical director Spiridon "Spiridoom" Sprenger bet on experience and a more aggressive approach. Hence, while the young guns Lautaro Lucifero and Santiago Souberbielle had the freedom to go into an early escape group, the back up plan was to have a fit Sten Stenberg, accompagnied by veteran Thierry Tiendrébéogo and Yossi Youshimatz. And the race development proved Sprenger right. While the group was given some time, but not enough to succeed, the number of riders in the peloton got smaller after each little hill or pavé part. In the end, Sten and Thierry managed to finish the race in the main group. In the final sprint, Sten almost got a podium place, finishing fourth. While this result was more than expected, in the end, it was the thought of being so close to the podium or even a win that stuck from the race. Plenty motivation for KBK on Sunday.

And boy was it enough motivation. While Lautaro and Santiago could follow the race on TV after their effort an Saturday, Calcedonio Cantagalli and Quincy Qinnuayuak joined the team to represent the Team FL sprint department. But why not Alex Alailefaleula too, you might ask. Well, it was his free weekend, visiting his family. And family time is important. So, without Alex, the team still trusted Calcedonio and Quincy to be ready for a possible bunch sprint in the end. And for everything else, Sten was ready again too. The race plan was slightly different from Saturday. At KBK, the team decided to control from the peloton, which was needed after the initial escape group got a lot of time. Even after the peloton was split in two groups, the team around the two sprinters stayed calm in group 3 and followed the plan. In the end, both groups in front got caught and it came to the finale. Lead by Sten and Quincy, Calcedonio proved to have the strongest legs after almost 200 km and crossed the finish line first.

So, first win after the opening weekend. While Team FL won Omloop five times already (just last year, Tesfaye Tsegaye was successful), the KBK win was a first thanks to Calcedonio Cantagalli, his sprint train and the chasing effort of everybody else in the team. Now the team management hopes, that this winning spirit will last for the upcoming classics, inlcuding the March highlight Milano - San Remo. Maybe by then, Alex is ready too...

Alex in MSR shape crossing the Kemmelberg twice

T-1 day until MSR! And Alex is already in shape, winning the Bredene Koksijde Classic

While a 1/4 of the team is already in Italy preparing for MSR and inspecting the route, the other 3/4 to Belgium this morning to ride the Bredene Koksijed Classic. The goal was to have some practice for tomorrow, a final rehearsal if you will. While most of the line up had not much to do, 2/3 of the sprint department, Cantagalli and Qinnuayuak, had to learn what their helpers usually do during such a stage: control and chase. Both did very well and after some disturbances after twice crossing the Kemmelberg in the middle of the race, everybody was caught until the last km and the final bunch sprint. Without his usual sprint train, Alex had to navigate solo through the bunch and crossed the finish line first.

As usual, a win in Koksijde may be a good sign for MSR, but then again, you can't compare anything with MSR. But for sure, it is a good sign for Gent-Wevelgem. The Kemmelberg doesn't look very frightening anymore after all. The question is though, if Calcedonio and Quincy now deserve to ride for their chances as well, after working for Alex' win. In the meantime, Yossi Youshimatz won his first race at Orsova - Targu Jiu five days ago. Maybe it's his day tomorrow? We'll find out...

Alex takes over the Via Roma!

In a action packed finale, Alex Alailefaleula wins MSR outsprinting everybody.

Alex Alailefaleula, il velocista! That's what Team FL interoduced its best asset for an MSR win this year before the race. And il velocista he was. But first things first. Team FL sent a team that was tailored for a bunch sprint: Fürst and Stenberg to block and bring back on the Cipressa and the Poggio, Youshimatz and Joffrey to chase and secure in between and afterwards, Souberbielle, Knöppel, Lucifero and Tiendrébéogo to control and help before all the actions happens.

The opponents were many: Chemnitz Pro Cycling Team (CPCT) with uber classic Eberhard and AlvaradoQuesada for a reduced sprint. RV Allagen brought both Fabisch and Ouédraogo, while Belaid was luring for his own chance. Fraegg also attended with a sprinter and Vervloesem to catch Eberhard's wheel. More of the sprint squad: ATB-Racing with Patton, r TAKA with the Flanders crew and Hwangbo and FCPorto1988 with Assun(ao and 92 flat rider Gyeong An. Bearclaw's Woolley with 55 mountain also in the mix for a recuded sprint.

As it happens, the first half of the race was pretty quiet. Then at km 155, Rsc Spree woke everybody up with a double attack, followed by the same move from TDMLuxemburg a km later. Chased by CPCT, later joined by RV Allagen, the group of four riders stayed in front a bit more than 80 kms, still way to go until the Cipressa. The chasers stayed in control mode and kept the peloton together. Short before the Cipressa, Team FL joined the control with Souberbielle to avoid helper saving attacks, that still happened by - you guessed right - RV Allagen. The peloton reacted quickly and the attacks were neutralised right at the Cipressa.

And now the real race begun. Fabisch from RV Allagen made the pace that split the whole peloton, leaving Alex and his helpers 11 seconds behind the main group, but with all the helpers including the Fürst. Only Stenberg stayed in front to cover the first group as well. After the decisoin to wait for Hwangbo and his helpers from r TAKA, they both started a powerful chase. While RV Allagen tried to keep them away, the combined effort from Team FL and r TAKA closed the gap even a few kms before the Poggio. Some riders tried to get away before the start of the final climb, but everything was under control.

The inevitable attack from Maik Eberhard happaned two km before the top of the Poggio, creating a 10 sec gap. On his wheel was Xandres Vervloesem, as expected. Everybody else was kept in check by Team FL and r TAKA. The two classic riders could keep their advantage - until the downhill. It was a miracle they both did not crash, looking at their downhill skills.

So, in the end, it was the reduced bunch sprint that was perfect for Alex. Two trains, RV Allagen and r TAKA, Alex on Ouérdaogo. When Fabisch took over from Belaid, the RV Allagen train got the superior position over the r TAKA boys. And at 150m before the finish line, it was high noon for Ouédraogo and Alex. Ouédraogo obviously not at full strength anymore had to watch Alex cross the finish line first on the Via Roma and even see Woolley take him over as well. So the win the day before in Belgium was a good preparation eventually.

After Harald Mühlenberg in 2008 and Stefano Benni in 2013, Alex Alailefaleula is the third Team FL rider to win this cycling monument. That leaves Team FL at 11 monument wins and 53 classic wins overall.

Sten Stenberg stumps opponents at RVV!

Sten Stenberg outsmarted his opponents in the final sprint and won the Tour of Flanders.

For the first time in a long time, Team FL was able to participate in the afternoon edition of a monument. Usually, it's the evening that is harrassed by the Liechtenstein cylcing team's attendance and its horrible puns, weird strategies and surprisingly pretty successful visits. So, afternoon, not evening. Which also meant: other opponents than usual. This time, the team led by TD Spiridon sprenger faced grandees like Alive And Dead, Big Donkey, Black-Star, Gipfelstuermer, Hansa or Tukhtahuaev. And list of riders suited for RVV was equally long. And although Sten Stenberg was mentioned before the race as being "dangerous", looking at all these strong teams, Spiridon Sprenger fancied the team to go into an early escape.

With Rik Ribbens and Santiago Souberbielle, the young guns shaped the start of the race for Team FL, joining riders from Black-Star, Hansa, SweetLemmon and Los Teros in the escape group. The cooperation was good, but with three teams also coordinating the chase in the peloton, the chances were not very high for a win out of this escape. So, for a long time, not much happened, as it is usually the case in race longer than 250 km with a very hard 2nd part. Until km 218, when the peloton exploded at the Paterberg and the real race begun.

Seven kms later, it was the same procedure at the Koppenberg. And at km 228, a rather flat pavé part, Sten was gone as well. The only team mate left at this point was Yossi, who tried his best to bring his leader back into the main group of favourites. Luckily, he wasn't alone trying that. Until the last passing of the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg, Stenberg was back, but Youshimatz was visibly exhausted from his effort. And as expeted, after the Kwaremont, he was not to be seen anymore, his day was over. Stenberg though still had to catch up a small gap that opened to the best pavé riders. Again, he profitted from other teams with the same problem and could close this gap too, this time at the Paterberg.

As predicted by Big Donkey, Sten found himself together with the main favourites after the Paterberg, hoping for a lucky punch in the final sprint. And as there was no succesful attack out of this group anymore, a sprint it was. And what a sprint. It was pure chaos. But like Alex Alailefaleula at MSR, Sten embraced the chaos and could position him well, even finding a wheel to follow after the initial confusion. 200m before the finish line, Sten himself launched his sprint and would not been caught anymore, winning ahead of Daan Boersma (Gipfelstuermer) and Regis Malot (zizou).

It is the 4th Team FL victory at the Ronde (Perluigi Piano in 2023, Iwan Franko in 2016 and Jens Scholz in 2010) and the second monument win in 2025 after Alex won MSR, which is two ouf of two so far. Understandably, the team mangement is very happy. The question now is, if Sten will also ride PR next Sunday and compete for the win there too. But Spiridon Sprenger is known to be realistic about the chance to win PR. Which doesn't mean that Team FL won't try...

Alex adds Scheldeprijs to his accolades

Alex Alailefaleula wins the Scheldeprijs. It's the 8th Scheldeprijs victory for Team FL.

In this year's edition of the Scheldeprijs, Alex was not only the best sprinter on paper, he also had the second best sprint train with Quincy and his lead out Calcedonio. Hence, it was up to Team FL to control the race an chase the two early escapers from Hitdorf Cycling. The chase was started by Bearclaw Cycling though, having the strongest pavé riders in its line-up and Kasper Woolley for a possible bunch sprint. As usual, not much happened until the pavé sectors came in. It was at this point, when Bearclaw Cycling decided to put some pressure on the sprint teams and attacked itself. In the peloton, it was still Team FL chasing, now accompagnied by FSG Sattelpuper with probably the best sprint train around.

In the end, the sprint teams held everything together and chased down the expected late pavé attack by Bearclaw Cycling. The final sprint was kind of a duel between the FSG Sattelpuper and Team FL sprint train, which the former won. At least until Alex unleashed his sprint power and overtook everybody on his way. In the end, it was Bob Iliev form Vikings Berling who came closest to beat Alex, while Stefan Schlot couldn't use the position his sprint train put him in and got third.

Alex' win was the 8th overall Scheldeprijs win for Team FL. Roger Schnitzer in 2009, Kari Steinsson in 2013, Phineas Federspiel in 2014 and 2015, Thibault Rossard in 2019, Eduardo Spohr in 2020, Frits Flaskjer in 2023. These are Alex Alailefaleula's predecessors winning the Scheldeprijs for Team FL. Most of these riders were sprinters, but youlalso find the flat rider with sprint (Roger), the pure pavé specialist (Kari) and the early escape winner (Thibault). With 8 victories, the Scheldeprijs is not only the most won Classic race, but the most won race overall for Team FL. The team management is not sure, but it's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in second place with 5 wins. Just for fun statistics, the most won stage race for Team FL is the Tour des Pavés (5 times).

Princely time at De Brabantse Pijl

The successful spring classics campaign continues for Team FL. Fürchtegott Fürst has left his first mark in Team FL history and won De Brabants Pijl.

To achieve a first is usually nice. First kiss, first job, first salaray... you get it. Of course, there are firsts you don't want to experience that much. First break-up, first hangover, first time hospital after you were too clumsly to steer your bike on gravel and landed on your handlebar with your finest parts... you get that too I guess. But yesterday was one of the good firsts! It was the first race win for Fürchtegott Fürst, the latest great prospect for Team FL. And it was his first classic win too, as he won De Brabantse Pijl. He's not the first to win that race for Team FL though, but the first for a long time. In 2009 (in-)famous Louis Thuilliez got his vittoria (!) in Overijse and in 2013, Team FL all time great Stefano Benni managed to win it too.

But how did he do it, you may ask. Well, the two main ingredients were persistance and luck I guess. Persistance as in the Fürst doing his trainings very well, as in the team riding for his chances with Rik going in early, Thierry taking over and Joffrey closing the gap further. Persistance as in not giving up once he couldn't keep up (he learned that from Sten) and still believing in his chance. But enough of persistance now, it's getting pathetic, and we know that that's one perk that may trigger some folks around here.

So all fine about getting back, catching the initial group, trust the process when chasing a really dangerous OL attack by Yesaya Kosasih who only got shy of 2 secs not winning the race, and all with the help of other teams (mainly Medical Service, Stevens and Elaska). The final km approached, 4% of climbing, an uphill sprint. Sten could have been ideal here, but contrary to RVV, he didn't feel in best shape. So the team focused on the Fürst. The obvious wheel choice for him was Wolfgang Grimmer, who looked the strongest in the main group. It turned out, that he was the only one who could follow Grimmers' punch up to the top and even overtake him on the final 500m of the race. That's the story. The question is: will the Team FL spring classics story continue in this fashion? The next opportunity is the beer race in the Netherlands on Sunday. Let's see, if Team FL will have a princely time there too.
