Afternoon Giro 2022, 15h

Post by Robyklebt » Wed Apr 27, 2022 11:26 am

Giro time!

And time for a thread.

The Donkey will start, with his usual team set up.

1 A. Basterretxea
2 I. Ardila

8 D. Meucci
9 A. Short

Clever people now will have noticed that that's only 4 riders. And number 3-7 are missing. THe not so clever majority here now knows too, after all I just told them.

Anywy, let's first talk about the 4 guys with numbers, and the 1 guy who is assured to start, but doesn't know his number yet, A. Carpinteiro.

Asier starts as leader, el guapo as number 2 with the number 2. But since they are close in skills, their roles could change during the Giro too.
Carpinteiro and Short, my 2 traditional 60-80, even if one of them is a 56-85 right now. We hope to bring him up to 60 mountain sometimes in the future, for the Giro 56-85 will have to do, or 57-85 if he trains more before the start.
Their roles is the usual, reg, batteries for the climbers, riding if necessary, escapes if seems a good idea. Just what 60-80es do, it's a role, not skills sometimes.
Meucci, the strong flat guy I always like to bring just to sleep better. He's Italian too, fits too

Then the guys in the pre-selection:

D. Baas
T. Bradman
S. Bieri
C. Drinkwater
M. Gabel
R. Gamboa
R. Huizinga
O. Lambert
G. Moretti
R. Pecci

The original plan was Bieri and Lambert. But Bieri isn't training, 69 mountain still. And Lambert is stuck at 70 too, will potentially start downtraining already. So Drinkwater, 68-79 and LBL winner, and Huizinga, 70-79 certainly have chances to replace them. But... 47-43 reg for Lambert Bieri, 42-40 for Charles+Remmert. The youngsters have too much TT as well, which makes them expensive, they will cost more than the 2 others next month probably. Remmert weak downhill. Bieri good sprint, which might not help much if he's always dropped, and the main job for 70-80es (role, not skills, I have 0 70-80es)... is to help our GC riders in a GT. So... ???? 4 guys, 2 places.

Next... Gabel or Gamboa or both? Gabel after winning MSR has to start really, so very likely he will.

That leaves 1 place:
Gamboa? But 4, potentially 5 low flat leaders in the team seems a lot even if we don't expect to be favorites, forced to ride a lot in any stage really...
A third classic: Not a fan, we try to become cheaper for GTs, improve the fun factor in the game, cheaper teams, more fun, big expensive teams=bad for fun, blocking of races.
A flat guy? Not really convincing either. No reg, no mountain... hm
Moretti: Almost 0% chances, too old, but Italian. He would only come into the team if sicknesses, injuries or doping cases prevent too many riders to start, he then would take over their number. The same counts for Pecci, they are really only in the pre-selection since 15 riders are allowed there.

GIRO!!!

Last year was very frustrating with all the CC sprint wins, and noone to work for. This year we start with a contender and we also bought a helper for Boaz. With his training we needed to change something our team building plans were not meant for. So Alo Taaramäe will help us out for some months. So lineup will look like

#1 Boaz Trakhtenbrot (leader and future Giro winner [probably])
#2 Alo Taaramäe (clear #2, helper with 84 mountain and 80 downhill, lacking some reg)
#3 Akos Detreköi (Classic you all dream of, whatever you want Akos can offer it, flat, downhill, sprint, reg, just some mountain is missing)
#4 Erich Tschermak (Young classic who wants to reach 70 mountain in Italy)
#5 Helmut Heuser (Young classic with more flat and some sprint)
#6 Geoffrey Hinton (Can the new money sprinter win a stage like the old money sprinter?, also a nearly 60-80)
#7 Otto Schötensack (The flat rider)
#8 György Szabo (Hungarian tempobolzer)
#9 Oskar Simony (Austrian tempobolzer)

Thats right now the most likely lineup, Fix starters are #1-#3 and #8-#9

In the hunt:
# Lance Fortnow: Our 60-80 guy (now 58-80-75) on his way down, still his reg is helpfull even if he downtrains again until the GIRO
# Jakob Uexküll: the 65-71-77 pseudo 60-80 without reg can probably replace one of the classics
# Nöbauer, the PR winner has to be on the list, even if he lacks reg and downhill

All others are more or less out
August Oetker would have started without Taaramäe, but he lacks reg, downhill and also some mountain. Would be useless as a defender and has just little stage chances
Boaz Trakhtenbrot:
  • Winner Giro 2022
  • 10 GC wins
  • 16.609 Eternal Points

The only real Giro! I have no idea how many stages will be covered by Team FL, but boy, the ones that will be covered, will be covered, no question. And who will cover them? Team FL riders, exactly. So far, so logical. Short story even shorter, here's the possible line-up from A to Z, literally.:

x1 Aaron "Triple A" Armleder,
x2 Ben "BB" Bollendorff
x3 Bertram "Berti" Büchel
x4 Fortunato "Lucky" Fontdevila
x5 Guido "gg" Görtzen
x6 Kornelius "Chinbreaker" Kinn
x7 Magnus "Mama" Marxer
x8 Promethus "Firestarter" Proulx
x9 Zacharias "Zach" or "ZZ Top" Zahn

Possible changes: Kevin Klinkenberg for Kornelius Kinn

Goal: Win everything (as usual), waste a lot of money, listen to weird music.
I didn't mean to say it. But I meant what I said.

Team Mobster will join, big parts of the team are clear:

#1 Unai Agirrezabala (Esp)
#2 Felix Gottwald (Aut)
#3 Felix Ritzinger (Aut)
#4 Siim Liivik (Fin)
#5 David Kohl (Aut)
#6 Johannes Lamparter (Aut)
#7 Manuel Fettner (Aut)
#8 Lukas Greiderer (Aut)
#9 Kjell Skoglund (Nor) or Mario Seidl (Aut) or Tim Merlier (Bel)

There are some stages for Skoglund, so he may be our 9th guy. So the same squad as Romandie.

Moin :)

As it was a big dream of the Donkey, Bahrain-Merida will start at the Afternoon-Giro

Lineup is clear, as we try to ride as cheap as possible to have some fun and go often in escapes. But its clear too, that we will miss some stages. Shouldnt be a big problem, since we wont have much to do with the GC!

#1 Tyler Hincapie - The "Kapitano" of our Team in italy this year, if we can call a young classic (25 yo) "leader", but he has the best mountain skill of our lineup and is in good training-mood.

#2 Matti Hautamäki - The Monster and best helper for every flat and hilly stage. Lets see if he will be allowed to go for his own at some stages.

#3 Jussi Hautamäki - The Monsters young brother that doesnt like flat training to become a monster too. Since weeks he told everyone that his favorit color is green. But what does it mean :?:

#4 Samuel Samuelsson - Future classic with good sprint. Giro comes too early for him. His Job is to gain as much experience as possible to be ready for many wins after the italy trip!

#5 Finn Karlsson - 60-80-Escape-guy for nearly every kind of stage. Hopefully he will be lucky at one day.

#6 Mika Antomäki - Money-Sprinter with Reg, what means he will be Kapitano and helper depending on the type of stage. The manager hopes he will come to terms with the role of helper in his old age.

#7 Manuel Feuerstein - Flat-Helper from Austria, who told me his plan is to go in escape at a stage where TMA is favo and let him through to have an Austrian stage winner.

#8 Rudolph Egger - Second Flat-Helper form Austria. Heard about Manuels plan and wants to copy it.

#9 Hallvard Losnedahl - Future 60-80 with only 22 years. He has two goals in italy: First he wants to train perfectly to become a real 60-80! Second goal is to ride in front in the wind as much as possible to let his long beautiful blond hair blow in the wind.

There were also considerations to let the new Bahrain-Merida-Star Matti Lindstöm - The future Giro-Winner 2023 - start here, but he prefers to stay in cool sweden to train hard.

Goals for our team:
--> Fun
--> At least one stage win (not letting grow the gap of stage wins to TMA too much) :D
--> Gain experience
--> Improve my english :idea:

Falkenbier will join the afternoon, with the usual cannon fodder team

1 Alvaro Balanta - Leader
2 Pascal Binggeli - 2nd Leader
3 Kjetil Brustad - 3rd Leader
4 Mickey Fish - Waterboy, and somehow leader nr. 4
5 Rachid Hammami - Schinkenmutti, and tempo leader
6 Bruno Heeb - Leader of the Liechtensteiner gusy
7 Thabani Mbule - Another leader, the african beast!
8 Samuel Oyongo - African leader nr. 2
9 Ilya Pavlyuchenko - Still chasing his first win, so will be leader in most of the stages

No big goals. Try to be online as much as possible and win at least one stage. With 9 leaders in the team, shouldn't be a big challenge 8-)

One more night and it's Giro time! Hence, a little preview for the only real Giro, the Afternoon Giro:

Teams:

Alive And Dead
Climbers/GC guys: Boaz Trakhtenbrot, Alo Taaramäe
Classics: Akos Detreköi, Erich Tchermak, Helmut Heuser
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: Geoffrey Hinton
Other: Otto Schötensack, György Szabo, Oskar Simony

Bakers gonna bake. During flat stages, you might add some Hinton to the receipe, but besides from that, all ingredients indicate that it’s time to eat Trakhtenbrot all day every day during the Giro for AAD.

Bahrain-Merida
Climbers/GC guys: None
Classics: Tyler Hincapie, Matti Hautamäki, Jussi Hautamäki
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: Mika Antomäki
Other: Samuel Samuelsson, Finn Karlsson, Manuel Feuerstein, Rudolph Egger, Hallvard Losnedahl

Girl I am gonna make you sweat, sweat till you can’t sweat no more... That’s what Bahrain-Merida is all about. Well, not what you are thinking, but the Hautamäki brothers are heating the finnish Sauna already for some relaxation and recovery for them and their teammates either after riding for Antomäki or attacking themselves.

Big Donkey
Climbers/GC guys: Basterretxea, Ardila
Classics: (Bieri?)
Time trialists:
Sprinters: (Gabel?)
Other: Meucci, Short

The mystery team. Still not sure which riders will be present at the start in Hungary. No information leaks from Japan so far. But then agian, it's very likely that Big Donkey will have two climbers and 7 additional animals ehm riders out of the Zoo.

Falkenbier:
Climbers/GC guys: Alvaro Balanta
Classics: Pascal Binggeli, Thabani Mbule
Time trialists: None
Sprinters:
Other: Kjetil Brustad, Mickey Fish, Rachid Hammami, Bruno Heeb, Samuel Oyongo, Ilay Pavlyuchenko

Self-proclaimed cannon fodder team Falkenbier builds his craft around some climber flavor with Balanta and some classic taste around Binggeli and Mbule. For the rest of the line-up, there seems to be “Hopfen und Malz verloren”.

Gipfelstuermer:
Climbers/GC guys: Pierre Pagie, Luuk Lootens
Classics: Vittore Vespa, Aldo Abbiati, Giacomo Gerbi
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: None
Other: Gapsar Gagneux, Felix Fischer, Oleksandr Outschakov, Famara Faye

Gipfelstuermer stays true to his name, having a line-up that suits the team's climber Pagie and Lootens. Rumour has it thought that Vittore Vespa has been accused of motor doping. So let's see if he can be gagneux or is more like an outsch-experience, fishing for the front pagies in the cycling news.

Mosca:
Climbers/GC guys: None
Classics: Enrico Petilli
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: Vadim Burssenskiy, Loic Vanspeybrouck, Taco Lammertink
Other: Mauri Declercq, Corné Kreder, Adila Nejari, Stim Serry, Quinten VanMelsen, Stijn Serry

Mosca with the typical sprinter and escape line-up. And Enrico Petilli. Rest looks up for a debate. Anyway, let’s hope those riders are very self-reliant, as their manager tends to be notably absent.

Team FL
Climbers/GC guys: None
Classics: Aaron Armleder, Zacharias Zahn
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: Magnus Marxer, Benjamin Büchel, Fortunato Fontdevila
Other: Guido Görtzen, Prometheus Proulx, Kornelius Kinn, Ben Bollendorff

The Liechtenstein cycling team orbits around Armleder for hilly stages and Marxer for bunch sprints during this years’ Giro. The rest of the line-up adds to their gravity or tries to ride with escape velocity.

Team Mojabahs:
Climbers/GC guys: Toni Berg, Jonas Wunderlich, Thomas Mayer, Ben Vogt
Classics: Ingo Schröder, Alexander Noll, Norbert Richter
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: None
Other: Holger Rost, Lutz Fischer

This line-up looks like pain in the mountains. 5 riders with 75 or more mountain skill and only two riders with less than 65. All with decent to very good regeneration skills. Holger and Lutz look achingly bad next to their teammates. But with only 9 riders in its roster, Team Mojabahs does not have agonize over its Giro line-up this year.

T-Mobile-A:
Climbers/GC guys: Unai Agirrezabala
Classics: Felix Gottwald, David-Kohl, Felix Ritzinger, Siim Liivik
Time trialists: None
Sprinters: Kjell Skoglund
Other: Manuel Fettner, Lukas Greiderer, Johannes Lamparter

Skoglund winning the sprint, secured by Ritzinger. That could be the running gag for slightly hilly sprint stages during this year’s afternoon Giro. Besides these two jokers, Agirrezebala looks ridiculously good for his 26 years of age. Let’s see who laughs last.

Favourites:

General classement:
In a group with plenty of good climbers, Trakhtenbrot has the little egde that lifts him over the rest. On paper. It will be interesting to watch how active teams like Big Donkey or Team-Mojabahs try to attack in mountains.

***** Trakhtenbrot
**** Basterretxea, Berg, Agirrezabala, Pagie
*** Ardila, Wunderlich, Balanta, Berg
** Taaramäe, Lootens
* a surprise rider

Points classement:
The nominal best sprinter (so far) is Magnus Marxer, but due to the profile of the stages, it looks like sprinters with a bit more mountain skill have a little advantage. And among those, Skoglund looks like the best skilled rider for the maglia ciclamino. And he has the team for it too.

*** Skoglund
** Vanspeybrouck, Antomäki, Marxer
* Büchel, Brussenskiy, Lammertink, Hinton,

Mountain classement:
As usual, the mountain classement could go to the best climber, or to the most active escaper. Maybe a climber who falls out of the GC competition early? We will find out.

*** the one who wants it
** another one
* a surprise rider

Youth classement
A Wunderlich victory in this category would not be a miracle...

*** Wunderlich
** …
* a surprise rider

Team classement
Just listed the teams regarding mountain skills and put not much thought into it...

*** AAD, Team Mojabahs
** Big Donkey, Gipfelstürmer
* a surprise team
I didn't mean to say it. But I meant what I said.

Not sure if this is the right thread... was looking for a thread named "The real Giro 2022" .... but couldn't find it....

Anyway, we think it is the real Giro! So we bring the real team! We bring our 2 young Belgian climbers Pierre PAGIE & Luuk LOOTENS! They don't like training and they haven't won much yet, but now is their chance! In fact, Pagie has beaten Trakhtenbrot in Tour de la Provence - not in GC, but on the Montagne de Lure! And Lootens, he has won the youth rider classement at Tour de Algarve!

Then, we also bring some real superstars! L-B-L winner Vittore VESPA is coming with his two Italian friends Aldo ABBIATI and Giacomo GERBI! RVV winner Gaspard GAGNEUX is joining as well! Two monument winners and we haven't even mentioned the most famous rider in our line-up yet! Famara FAYE has inserted his dropper post into his seat tube and is ready for some action at the Giro!

The team will be completed with helpers Felix FISCHER and Oleksandr OUTSCHAKOV.

Goals: Play as much as possible with new version to motivate myself to keep working on it (and conquer the maglia rosa and keep it till Verona).

Drinwater+Huizinga
Gabel+Gamboa it is.

Drinkwater with training and LBL deserves it.
Huizinga with 70 mountain our best classic. Lambert the same, but due to age downtraining possible.

No Bieri, so Gamboa makes sense. Gabel is fix anyway by now. He hopes or hoped for Bosilj though...maybe Falkenbier changes his mind?

Maybe I do too... Bieri in for Huizinga, then Gamboa out too and probably Baas in?

The Grande Partenza in Hungary. All teams expected and all of them with their announced line up. Unfortunately no surprise starter here, but 9 teams is a decent group. With the start, a Friendly F escape with 2 FL's and 1 Falke. They got nearly 20' before AAD started the chase, later joined by TMA and Bahrain. Even the Gipfelstuermers helped a little bit for their chances. Pagie and Vespa were motivated.

On a long 195km race, it wasn't enough for the escape. On the +5 finish it came down to a sprint of the climbers with Alvaro Balanta taking the first stage win of this year's Giro. Pagie is happy to be amongst the strong climbers today. First place would have been nice but Berg and Balanta seemed stronger on the final incline.

Tomorrow the TT, so immediately the next test for the GC favorites.

Standing after 1/21 Stages:

First stage 3 man escape, only AAD riding at first. Well at 18'. Then at some point went out, front too, but Bahrain took it up.

I thought stage favorites Falkenbier, 2 guys, +AAD, Gipfel, with sprint for their climbers I thought. Next Moja, Mobster, Donks too, but Mobster-Donks with the lack of sprint...
Mostly Bahrain and Mobster chasing then, final Balanta wins it, seemed the strongest.

GC:

Disagree with FL. First you can't put more than 2 guys at ****!!!! And Berg double is bad too!

***** Trakhtenbrot
Experience, good helper, good sprint all speaks for him. TT too, even if it's not that much.
Against him, he'll have to control the race. Some of his opponents might have the luxury of just following and chip away at the advantage,
**** Agirrezabala, Pagie
Agirrezabala with 87 like Trakhtenbrot is the guy that can hope to follow and gain time here and there. Help a bit in the back, depending on the situation, follow, go. Around a minute to catch up from the TTs. Taaramäe makes the task more difficult. The lack of sprint too. + is the higher chance of more mountain training.
Pagie not Basterretxea as second at ****. Could be the other way around too. But Pagie is younger, so training? And better classic helpers. Better sprint. Worse second climber. But both will need to attack, both mist likely will. Both with 85 mountain, so 2 less than Trakhtenbrot, and a few seconds more to gain back to him than Unai.
*** Ardila, Basterretxea, Berg

Here both Donkeys, Basterretxea basically like Pagie ( could have put Pagie here too, but then need to drop Ardila here..) needs attacks, will lose time on some stages for sure.
Ardila on the other hand has experience beating Trakhtenbrot, deserves ***! But actually his chances are not that much worse than Basterretxea's. If he gets the right escape that's fine too.
Berg, should really be ****. But the manager. He rode very well when Neumann was the clear favorite. Not much opposition, true, but handled it basically faultlessly. Much less impressive even with Neumann when he wasn't the clearly strongest rider anymore. And with Berg he beat Trakhtenbrot in Australia I'm told, but when we rode together so far he was highly unimpressive and mostly doing surprising counter-productive actions. If Moja wakes up and believes in him and rides with concentration like he did with Neumann: big danger. If he continues the focus on the mountain jersey for Schröder or Mayer, and unnecessarily concentrates on white Wunderlich, and a simple podium...** star guy. Should lose less than 40" to Boaz in TT. Team very good. Mayer despite his hill-flat-reg lacks downhill. For an offensive GC attacking race, not ideal. Schröder-Wunderlich on the other hand very good Vogt as well, but we all know it's impossible to keep 5 guys fit, the team looks better than it will be. IMO Mayer or Vogt out, a 60-80 in makes it better

** Lootens, Balanta, Wunderlich, Drinkwater.

Lootens if it's the 80 that gain time. Balanta if he follows, gains time with bonifications. Wunderlich if he trains and is the time gainer together with Lootens. Drinkwater as the only LBL winner that counts, afternoon. Riding in the dark is another skill, not needed here. Probably sneaking away, not being chased, nothing heroic like Drinkwater who resisted against countless teams chasing hard (they just forgot to click the tempo button)

*
Carpinteiro

The master of surprising the favorites in the back! Dismissed as under control, he has a knack for making the favorites regret underestimating his superhuman Galician power!

Rest is hopeless cannon fodder.

Bitter for the Donkeys somehow, Charles Drinkwater with the TT minus training on the 5th. 2" back, could have been enough.

In GC somehow Trakhtenbrot and Basterretxea the winners? React is on strike in the morning it seems, too lazy to start time travelling, but from what I remember somehow Basterretxea was the only one that basically was within the expected time loss to Boaz? 27" expected, think it was 24"? No guarantee.
Berg bad, on too late?
Pagie and Lootens very bad, losing time on purpose to have more freedom? (Maybe they sped up later)
Agirrezabala behind Basterrretxea?

All without guarantee.

Yeah looked to me like Berg was starting slowly, Pagie wasn't really on my watch list during the race. Boaz just losing a second to the fron at first made me hope he can reach top 3 and rosa, but later on the guys in front speeded up (or Boaz luck decreased). Today not sure if I am on. Sprint stage, let's see what Mosca and FL achieve.

One more day with the leaders jersey, my sitter Sevendown did a good job.
Also third place with Skoglund was very nice.

Tomorrow Boaz should take over rosa (actually it's yellow ingame).

Hm forgot to rewatch the race yesterday, so I have no clue what really happened in the finish. Big sieb by Gip at the pave sections? Was at a blind-flight from this moment because just on the app and not possible to scroll or change groups. Think I was still in with Heuser blue at the first sieb, changed to red and put Akos in after some km. Had no clue if Taaramäe is behind Boaz or not (had everybody helping Boaz at that time). Just saw after some kms that nearly every climber is in the Gip group and was fearing cooperation there without knowing my exact race situation. After Lootens doing tempo in front I could finally see my riders again, + chat was so kind to let me know that Taaramäe is in that group too before. Akos already siebed and a I think Schröder was in tempo, so Wunderlich probably behind too? Or Berg? makes no sense that he is back, should be one of the strongest. So Alo started tempo at ~km 155 (gap was ~28seconds if I remember right). But Alo could win back time in the steep and lost again time against some classics (Falke?) riding in the flatter part. Finally catched back the group and Ivan attacking at that moment? 5 seconds in the beginning, gaining a seconds afterwards. Not a real danger. From that time finally at the laptop. Than after the last +8 attack by Boaz and Alo, was not fast enought to attack on +8. Surprisingly just Unai hanging on Boaz (ok thats not too surprising, but on +7 some would be able to follow probably), more surprisingly is that those climbers didn't cover Alo's wheel. Just Balanta and Wunderlich on Alo. Rest 50s behind. With Balanta there stage chances decreased dramatically + the fear of an attack in the flat Unai can follow but Boaz not. Luckily he attacked earlier than I had expected and Unai was still in Boaz wheel. Thanks to Unai's last +6 attack we got rid of Wunderlich and the stage seconds were enough to get into rosa.

The Donkeys were in the back too, fully relying on you. Helped 1 km, Ardila, brought it back to 1", Taaramae already weakened would have taken longer. But wanted to attack on the +9, with weakend Taaramäe looked like a perfect idea. Anticipate to lose less time mostly.

Asier brilliantly wasn't following anybody yet, so pretty happy Berg and Pagie didn't follow, all alone in the back.. sniff.

Sprint, a bit the expected scenario for much of the race. Early attack, but seemed unlikely to go through with FL controlling early. Mosca joining. Mayer goes for red in the big climb, then siebs, At first then 3 groups, first one with Skoglund, second one with FL, third one with Gabel and one Mosca, think the other one was ahead. Do they continue or not in front, seemed possible, but actually now think was still difficult. Yes, sprinters in the back split, with Donks and 1 Mosca in the back. There a possible Donkeymistake, instead of riding immediately, chasing the Gipfel 1" ahead who was waiting for Faye... could catch him, he has more mountain, but Faye will be dropped, Short might manage to keep Gabel hanging on fighting.... But maybe would then have been bye bye soon after anyway... Wait, FL and Donkey ride in the back, Gipfel in the second group, then FL changes, Mosca is offline (he's in the office and often busy, while it would be nice to get some info sometimes, "will be there at the end", it's already nice he's there. Short alone, was worrying a bit there. But decided to help FL in the second group, CArpinteiro, but only 1 km, then in front they stopped. REasoning was the sooner FL is back, the sooner the tempo there goes down, the better the chances for Gabel to come back. But they stopped, then FL waited, which made sense, help from Mosca and me helps him.

Green.. before the last 5 attack by Gipfel, right after one more Gipfel and 1 Mobile... FL partying at home, Mosca working in the office, so no reaction to be expected fast, Donkey went in, fast hill, then 1 km Meucci, but gained 1", 2 were necessary. They then moved away a bit, but FL between 2 snacks put in a different ride, I went a bit low quality mass, Bahrain added the occasional rider, in and out... then Mosca on and put in his stars, sprint assured.

Sprint, this time on FL, both FL and Mosca went at the same time with their second rider, Mosca unlucky with his pre settings (or on the mobile) FL being slightly ahead went right, so Mosca going left was blocked. Otherwise could have been him too today. Marxer went at 150, then Gabel attempted to overtake him at 50, came close, but not enough. 3rd 2nd place in 5 days, so not bad, but I'd really prefer a win... well, still chances. Hope not to get a second Giro in a row with no stage wins.

Tomorrow a 6 58km from the end I was told by AAD in the fairness vote, probably meaning that it's possible, the problem for the sprinting Donkey Gabel is that he has to expect to be behind everybody there. 50 mountain today, 49 or 50 tomorrow. Ah, no, it's 49 today.... so 48/49 tomorrow. Brrr. Ok, flat more than Marxer, so there is hope there maybe? Hm 6 5 followed by a downhill... maybe after all I try, depends too on where the sieb will be, including Hinton, then it's 3 teams in front, vs FL in the back, possibly with Gabel? Possibly with Mosca? Hm, will see, will give it another try after all. But will most likely need to sacrifice one of my great classic stars to catch up to FL...?

FL, Falkenbier with 2 stages each, annoying guys. Mobster with one too, equally annoying.

Antomäki stops the FL festival. Hoped it would be Gabel...

Escape, including Bahrain who didn't believe in Antomäki. He even was telling everybody how Tore O. might have been a better choice than Antomäki. FL starts chasing, T Mobile A joins. Surprise, after really looking at the stage I thought it was a pretty safe sprint for Marxer-Mosca-Gabel. Great plan for Gabel, fit Huizinga drops back and does the 5, then fit Carpinteiro and Meucci bring him back to Marxer and all that needs to be done is win the sprint... So surprising to see Mobster join, clearly a mistake, but if for once he works I'm not going to talk him out of it

Then, a bit before the second sieb, FL announces that after all he won't be able to do anything anymore, real life calls. Mosca on off, so counting on him. Sieb, Huizinga and co keep it at around 9", comes down to 7" once I think, but then against the mass in front soon we started losing time. HOping for Mosca, but unfortunately he was busy at the office today probably. While on occasionally early on, missed the last 100km completely. So no chance.

In front the sprint, Bahrain train, Skoglund and Hinton behind, the Donkey knew then that Hinton would win. Falkenbier tries with Brustad, sneak away, but didn't work, the Bahrain train followed, then reacted, then at 100 Antomäki goes, Skoglund at 50, but in a photofinish decision Antomäki stays ahead. At that point was sure that Skoglund would win. Great in predictions today. Mobster did it right, normally I'd expect a 81 to overtake a 79 in the last 50 meters? But Antomäki stayed ahead, with his middle finger raised in direction of the team car! Tore, Tore, who's Tore? I'm Mika you clueless moron! We really need to do something about how the riders treat their Directeur sportifs, I'm always being mistreated by my riders too!

Falkenbier again, Mbule!

After staying in the peloton so far the Donkey thought maybe time to move a bit, some attack doesn't hurt.
Expected a rather big group, was small, only 2 Donkeys, 2 Bahrains and a Gipfel went. 2 pullers, 2 leaders, Faye along for the ride to be dropped for sure.
Goal was the stage, but thought put some fear into AAD wouldn't hurt, so go with a classic from the start, Drinkwater. Half expected AAD to try to get us back immediately, and if not to keep us close, but he wasn't bothered (which bothered the sensitive Donkey, he wants to be chased sometimes)... he let us go to 10' Then the chase, became too fast at some point, with Falkenbier joining. The expected sieb on the tough cat 3 climb, Viggiano something, we went red, maybe 2 km too late. Then a combination of different teams riding in the back. Then a Pagie attack, so from then on it was full power in the back, we had roughly 3' at the time, same as on top of the hill I think? But then it went down fast, and as had to be feared, the last 6 a few km before the end was the end of the escape. We came much closer than I thought, possibly without the Gipfelattack would have been enough? But probably still not, Falkenbier very likely would have ridden there, with Mbule he always had good chances. And ok like this, in front Drinkwater most likely would have won too easily, Bahrain rode too nicely, but well, we had no choice with the group coming close, but with more mountain and more sprint looked easy for Drinkwater in front unless Jussi took some km off.
Surprise of the day Armleder and Liivik, they arrived in front with Mbule, but were beaten in the sprint. Regrets for Huizinga, small one only though. If Liivik with 68 can come back to the front thanks to Detreköi, Huizinga if helped could have done it too. But I kept Ardila and Basterretxea fit, just in case, Huizinga only 3rd option and had to help after a while. But ok, even if he stays there, he won't be a factor in the sprint, so 4th, 7th or whatever he finally was, doesn't change much.

GC almost nothing changed, Pagie lost some seconds because he was still helping Vespa on the 6%, when both the Drinkwater escape and the Pagie escape were caught and dropped. But even for him little changed, like the other 85 climbers, and the 84 Ardila too, he will need one or more big time gains to win this Giro, 20" more or less at this point doesn't change that much .

Today lots of small hills, after yesterday Armleder has to be one of the favorites? Normally with the first real hard mountain arrival coming I wouldn't expect too much action from the teams with GC ambitions, rather keep the classics as fit as possible, but who knows, because of that there might be a chance to go through as well?

Interessting stage, no clear favorite with steep hill ~60km to the finish. Potential for a big attack limited but there. First waited if someone with the strong classics in the team (Falke, Moja, to a less degree mosca and Gip) are interessted. Gip was in front with Faye who is always a thread with his downhill, but not in that group constellation/stage. Mosca off. Moja with the first sieb at the Passo Colla and continuing to ride red. Was also the main reason to give the group that time. Don't get siebed at the first possible km. So Moja looked interessted in trying for stage for Wunderlich/Schröder. Way too fast for my taste so went out again with Szabo. Moja out too and all waiting for the dropped guys to finish my green rolling tempo to just controll for Rosa. Than after the expected Moja siebs at the steeper Sirino didn't take place Falke joined the tempo for the stage. Funny moment was when Falke went out of tempo when my rider was demanding a rest for ~10km. Well Moja took over with a small sieb at the first +11 and continued to ride. Than Vogt in from 133. My helpers that never had to ride (Hinton, Schötensack) in tempo behind and thought I need my 3 classics to chase the leaders group. But Vogt didn't dropp any of them and went out behind too. Than Gip took over tempo in the downhill and I missed the +5 were I wanted to go in tempo with one of my classics to controll the rest of the race, Gip went with Vespa and Pagie and luckily no other guys (classics+climber) to follow. Didn't look to terrifying and could have lived with Pagie gaining some seconds back. Moja helped in the back, finally trying for stage and Taraamäe was a brilliant guy to chase in that stage. As we came close enough to both groups for the final IS, Trakhtenbrot sprinted for the seconds, Detreköi was the guy who got the most help. Mainly because he should be able to controll dangerous attacks. But he was weakened enough to have no chance for the stage. A bit risky following ther with just the climbers in the group, but as long as we have no stage we need to try things. Classics group without climbers was the best thing for GC, Boaz taking 3 seconds (winning 1 to Unai I think).

Hm didn't FL say he won't be here today?
