Energy usage for giving up

Only a small problem, but anyway:
Today's race Gullegem - Koerse, Pancho Villa is behind the field with two helpers to save energy, managed to get to 618 after starting with 560. Then after accumulating 35 minutes and having 618 energy, he is taken out of the race and suddenly has 606 energy, meaning he lost 12 energy points by stepping off his bike. Looks like this was counted like making 1km of tempo.
