TTT Powerloss dropped Riders

Post by Hansa » Sat Nov 08, 2025 7:50 pm

So i checked for Powerloss of dropped riders today in the TTT and what i found is a bit ridicoulous.

so dropped rider lose a lot of power that can somehow be argued i guess but they lose a lot more on downhill than on uphill.

on -12 a dropped rider with low effort lost 36 Power while the same rider on +5 with the same setting lost 11
another rider on -12 lost 32 and on +5 he lost 6.

in general you could see they lose more as steeper downhill the km is and less if it was steeper uphill.

Not sure if thats a bug or thats just how its programmed but it doesnt really make sense^^

in my last TTT I put one rider solo in tempo on -5 he lost 85 energy, the next km he shared tempo with 5 others on 0% lost 11 energy. So it's programmed that way.

There are (and always have been) a few annoying features in TTTs:
- ridiculously high power loss for single dropped riders
- unintentional waiting for dropped riders far back
- high energy consumption on steep downhill (never noticed that before, but at least I understand now what happened today in my race ;) )

But one more thing, although it's technically programmed that way, it isn't necessarily intentional, but simply the way complex calculations can turn out. Looks like Buhmann (that code is untouched for ages) has some calculations in there that go berserk on very steep downhill. But it's usually not like there is some obvious place in the code where it says that energy consumption on steep downhill is high, but rather some complex calculation with many factors that with some specific values get results that are not what they were supposed to be.

Now maybe this can be fixed in the current code, but I don't have the time to invest in understanding it (it's unfortunately far from obvious) or finding the right solution to fix it without breaking three other things.
In the long run, the better solution for all those issues (and lots more) is basically to rewrite the whole race calculation. I have lots of ideas for that, but I'm not even close to starting it.
The workaround would be to avoid steep downhill in TTTs for now.

It's not just steep downhill that is crazy. It really just feels like the code got up and downhill the wrong way around. At least for dropped riders

Yeah its not steep downhill its every km the -5 is around 30 power the 0 is only 20 and the uphill is a lot less than the flat so lile Tukh already said its completely backwards.

But yeah i get that its not easily fixed gladly non flat TTT arent apprearing that much so i guess we have to deal with it.
