TdF 2021 14h, the post Giro criterium in the afternoon

Post by Robyklebt » Sun Jun 20, 2021 4:37 am

The Donkeys at the start. But what team?

Still thinking.

The most logical choice would be: Same team as the Giro, exchange Cousin Baaba with Espariat. Younger but almost identical skills...

But.....
1) It's the Tour, usually try to start cheaper
2) The level and number of climbers in the afternoon lately isn't that great. So make the team weaker?

But how.
Leave Apicella home the most obvious choice, but decided against that finally. After all no need to weaken poor Eiffel that much, he is french, TdF.

Right now I think it will be:

2 climbers: Eiffel leader, Apicella helper
1 classic: Coderch. Original plan was Espariat, but with Tom's TT, the salary is roughly the same, and 50 reg 73 mountain just is better.
2 60-80: Teixeira and Moretti
2 sprinters: Gabel and Messerli
1 flat reg-man: Stakhanov
1 top flat man: Trewlove

But still in the running:
Espariat: For Coderch. Or for Gabel? Since 2 sprinters might be a luxury that I might not want to afford
Lambert: 47 reg helps, not much flat less, 78...
Löffel: The only winner of the sprinters lately, he really wants to be there, but... Good sieber though
Quaghebeur: At 85 flat he's back in the pre-selection.

Anyway hope for a big group with a decent amount of climbers.

A race with "Giro" in the title and it's in the afternoon? I am in! problably... :).

... and if yes, with theses riders:

x1 Betram "BeBü" Büchel
x2 Bana "BaHa" Hassana
x3 Koen "KoKo" Koekelkoren
x4 Uros "UrKo" Kovacevic
x5 Magnus "MaMa" Marxer
x6 Yuji "YuNi" Nishida
x7 Pekka "PePi" Piippo
x8 Santiago "SaSt" Stolk
x9 Timo "TiTa" Tammemaa

The team has no ideas what goals are, some riders don't even know how to race. It's going to be fun!
I didn't mean to say it. But I meant what I said.

Well, 14h not optimal time for me for GTs or longer stage races. Profile doesn't look too promissing either for my team. Nevertheless will probably start here with Schwackhöfer (+Trakhtenbrot) and more cheap otherwise, have to check again later.

As I found out, that I can do shortraces on my handy, I'll join 14 h!
Maybe I can't be there untill the end, so it will be a cheap team.

My team is no surprise but i will post this here just for the record. Maybe i'll check it at some point and i'll remember some names from this team, especially being my first ever Grand Tour.

So, here we go with team Romoc Riders:

#31 Francisco SASTRE: gc guy, white contender, but with low regen
#32 Angel ARAGONES: sprinter, no chance
#33 Robin BRANDERHORST: classic guy, stage hunter
#34 Luis CHERRO: flat guy, helper
#35 Dennis DAHLHAUS: classic guy, stage hunter
#36 Peter KORONEK: breakaway guy, stage hunter, but mostly helper
#37 Nistor NOVAK: flat guy, helper
#38 Adam SASINKA: 60-80 guy, breakaway guy and helper
#39 Viktor WAAL: flat guy, helper

Objective: one stage win, top 10 GC

Finally cut Gabel and Lambert flew to France. With the low number of climbers (4, to in my team) needed another flat guy with reg ideally. So Gabel out, Lambert in 78 flat, 47 reg, he'll mostly be used as early tempo guy, at times maybe even before Stakhanov.

Apicella then yesterday stole the win from Eiffel...should have kicked him instead maybe.

We have a clear yellow favorit with Tim Eiffel (Big Donkey, Giro winner in the afternoon) for the yellow jersey. The fight for white promisses to be much more thrilling. Boaz Trakhtenbrot (Alive And Dead) has some reg and TT advantages but misses 2 mountain skills to Francisco Sastre (Romoc Riders) and Alo Taaramäe (Mosca). The fight for green has not really started but CircleCycle with his full train and lots of sprint stages on the way to Paris.

CC here! Set some team on thursday, forgot to recheck on saturday before the start.
Snel-Eselson-Lim for the sprint.
Sindarov for gc
Fakasega-Frazer-Ghazouani to get the sprint
Ouedraogo because of his name, and to have another rider with 60+ mountain just in case
Cousin Jambaar to do the early chase

No classics. A pity, they had a great month of training.
No TT guy. So just Snel and Sindarov for possible stagewins.

first 2 stages. not even online to make any kind of settings. But Snel showed ambitions for the green jersey by collecting 11 points on the road.
stage 3, the first MS. Good work by T-Mobster, Big Donkey and CC, last km catch from Eckersdorfer and Fakasega.
CC train, the only train, with Krog in the wheel. Lim and Eselson bringing Snel to the last 100m, and Krog not being able to overtake him in the last 50m.
Another GT stage for Boudewijn Snel :D + taking the lead in the points classement with 72pts.
Happy CC.

First flat stage. Sprinter teams united agains just 2 riders of Alive And Dead in the escape where Akos Detreköi tool back the Polka Dot jersey for the next days. CircleCycle, T-Mobile-A and Big Donkey for GC controlled the race and caught back Akos on the last km. In the bunch sprint CCs train was strong enough to bring Boudewijn Snel in the winning position.

Would have liked to start here, especially Famara was asking to ride 14h... but as our DS does not earn enough money with C4F, with his new job it is easier for me to ride 22h.

Trying to follow the race a bit, so happy to read some race reports here. Hopefully all 8 teams can have some success.

Second flat stage. The escape was formed by Team FL and Romoc RIders, both having 2 riders. They didn't get a too big lead since the sprinter teams started early in order to be sure of getting the massive sprint. They were caught in the last 2 kms after an impressive effort. In the final sprint, CircleCycle's train made the lead for the final sprint of Boudewijn Snel who took his 2nd stage win. The next stage is the first Time Trial of the tour and we should expect a shake in the general classification.

First TT. In front Franz could win without beeing challenged too much and wears the yellow jersey at least for some days. The fight for white was more thrilling, Boaz Trakhtenbrot (Alive And Dead) could first get some seconds on Francisco Sastre (Romoc Riders) who had better form and came back in the end. Francisco keeps his white jersey.

Next flat stage, and next Snel win. Just Team FL tried an escape in the middle of the race with Bana Hassana and Santiago Stolk. But this was easily controlled by CircleCycle, T-Mobile-A, Big Donkey, and Mosca. No changes in the GC and Franz stays in yellow.

There really isn't much to say from my side....

Eiffel is the clear GC favorite. His biggest opponent looks to be Apicella. Then Schwackhöfer. Sindarov? No reg. The celteam guy rides for celt, the manager was shockingly inept, bad, absolutely clueless during the Vuelta. I could give him 10' and still beat him. If he rides like he did then. Yes, he was so bad. Possibly worse. Maybe a nice guy, but at this point I prefer assholes who know how to ride than somebody who rides as badly as he does. Or did then, so far in the Tour he hasn't given me reason to complain yet.

So...? It looks like 21 days controlling, managing, not much else involved. Getting alliances, so that I don't have to do all by myself.

So far everything is working absolutely perfectly. EScapes small, escape teams not synchronized yet obviously. Well, Austrians, Italians, Liechtensteiner... buy some decent swiss watch, then it works!
Apicella got 2 stages. 1 was planned for him, if there was a chance the other one was more for Eiffel, but Apicella insisted on winning himself.

Then good collaboration so far in flat stages with CC and Mobster as well. That might change, Mobster at some point might have enough of not winning, and indeed beating Snel doesn't look easy. The guy in his wheel always has
somebody that can beat them in their wheel, so going early.... no big benefit. Maybe with different forms, possibly, things change now. But pretty confident CC will continue riding for his sprints. And I will help of course.

Middle mountain stages clearly the biggest danger for me. The maybe most critical for me over now. Stage 14 + 16 remaining, the rest is either mountain, where normally I have the team to control or flat, where as long CC keeps going for Snel I'm not in trouble either.

Of course it isn't won yet, one moment of inattention, one mistake and I can lose lots of time, or CC that decides that he doesn't want to win more than 5 stages and stops riding for sprints works too.

But still not much to say really, just riding, managing, trying to keep my alliances with everybody intact. Part of it is of course not caring much about stage wins. 2 more, one in the Alpes, 1 in the Pyrenees would be ok. At least one, so that I have a July win... ok, Messerli Champs-Elysees. Hm, 3... but really 1 is ok, 2 sort of a realistic goal, plus Champs a dream that will remain unfulfilled... For the rest I don't really care about stages. Happy to deal with it as we did today. Group goes, I control, they stop, I stop. Stage hopefuls start riding, I join immediately. But basically follow their lead, they go faster, ok, me too. If not, ok for the group to go through, which is what happened today.

Anyway, it's a bit like the Giro. There it was waiting 21 days to arrive second. Then fantasticos decided to do.. I still don't know what he did. Here it's waiting 21 days to win, hopefully it doesn't turn out like in the Giro, in the end I don't get what I wait for :D But even if, Giro was more important. Anyway, will be happy 2022 when I have Ardila and some other nice normal climber. Tim Eiffel is just boring. I always knew it of course, but thought I try nonetheless, try to find a little bit of humanity, excitement, something more than annoying puns in him. But no, nothing.

Finally the stage win at a GT for Bana Hassana. Now, everything else is a bonus. Unintentionally, the Giro mountain classement winner is now also in the polka dot jersey, but the team management hasn't decided yet if it's worth to go for it again. Usually, it doesn't have a big priority. But then again, maybe Bana wants to try it on his own? We well see :).

Btw, great statistics again from AAD!
I didn't mean to say it. But I meant what I said.

Stage 10:
Flat stage with little action, after a while Team FL attacked with 2 riders, but was not given much time by CircleCycle, Big Donkey and T-Mobile-A. Mosca also joined the tempo for the sprinters and Snel could win his 4th Tour stage looking pretty good for the green jersey.

Stage 11:
2 Times Mont Ventoux with not too much action (climbers group is way too small). celteam with an attempt on the first Mont Ventoux passage but Big Donkey could controll it pretty good with Corderch alone. On the final climb, Apicella and Eiffel attacked out of tempo and could save the gap until the finish line. In the back the riders for white were dropped at different times. Trakhtenbrot was dropped first but was able to comeback due to the Donkeys attack. After the attack Sindarov made the pace and dropped Trakhtenbrot and Sastre while Taaramäe could follow the pace a few km more. Thx to the cooperation of Trahktenbrot and Sastre, all 3 young riders arrive within the same group 1:37 behind Eiffel.

Stage 12:

Should have followed my heart and attack today. With the hard climbs yesterday, it was a good chance group has a chance. Team FL and Romoc Riders attacked both with 2 riders. In the final sprint Bana Hassana (Team FL) could win his second stage at this years Tour de France just a few cms in front of Robin Branderhorst (Romoc Riders) who win the only mountain point and still wears the Polka Dot jersey.

Rest day..

Nothing new really, Eiffel seems as secure as a week ago. Even with 83 mountain since early today. Apicella is there for that..

Now all teams except T-Mobile have won a stage, so new goal is to deny him his stage win? Ok ok, not really, hope he wins one. Maybe should go in escape with him and pace him a bit? Anyway, with Mosca-Romoc-celt in the last 3 days 3 new stage winners, so in the remaining 6 stages he should have his chances. Even if.... ITT no. Mountain top arrival, unlikely as well. Big Donkey will control, if no CC and no celt in the escape there can give away the stage win to somebody else (but not that easy with those mountains really) but seems likely celt might chase anyway. And well, I might not give enough time either.

So really 3 stages for T-Mobile left, tomorrow and then the 2 sprints. Probably a more aggressive way of riding, meaning forget safety for Hofbauer, it's not like being 7th or 9th or 10th is a big difference, risk his helpers in the escape. Even himself, but of course there I will have to ride earlier, don't like that...

For the rest.. Tomorrow escape seems likely (unless Mobster AAD want to ride for a very open classic sprint/finish, but well, with AAD he seems stronger, without AAD difficult to hold for Mobile, so.... escape seems the better chance) For me controlling in the back (if anyone wants to ride for stage I'll help, but don't really recommend it anyway) Probably the most dangerous stage left, but the mountains seem hard enough to be able to control flat riders that want to help Sindarov or such bad plans...

Wednesday Col du Portet, long flat approach, 3 hard and rather long climbs, stay in reg not automatic.
Thursday Luz Ardiden, much shorter, should be easy to control really, Coderch Tourmalet if necessary.
Original plan was to win either one of those 2 stages, but with Eiffel at 83 and more importantly (after all Apicella still has 86) already 5 stages... won't bother too much, will depend on my mood maybe.
Friday sprint, Or escape? With Wallinder at 93 now lots changes, all of the sudden CC isn't the 75% favorite anymore... so he'll want and expect Mosca to start as early as CC does. For CC and green it's a done deal anyway, he doesn't need more sprints, so IMO chances for escapes, more here than on the Champs Elysees, longer and less prestigious. My recommendation here: Schwackhöfer and Schöning in escape! Both ride down to 0!
ITT: Eiffel to win time on the other climbers again.
Paris: Messerli stage, Eiffel yellow is the plan.
Kraftsystemrevision! Include the distance!
Basics reform: Give blue a chance!
Don't punish bugusers. We all have to use bugs, since most of them are declared as "features"!

Stage 16:

Very active stage start with Team FL, Mosca, CircleCycle, T-Mobile-A, Alive And Dead and Romoc Riders in the escape. Many riders in tempo and Big Donkey controling the race. On the Col de Port celteam made hard tempo to distance Big Donkey helpers and so the gap of the group melted dramatically. At the bottom of the Col de la Core the leaders of the group (Akos Detreköi, Bana Hassana, Leevi Tivalainen, Enrico Petilli, Oumar Oedraogo) took over and but the climbers group catched the group before the mountain prize. After the downhill part, Leevi Tivalainen, Akos Detreköi, Jacob Wolfowitz, Koen Keokelkoren and Uros Kavacevic formed the stage winning group. The sprint was then decided by Jacob Wolfowitz against Koekelkoren.
