Giro 2021 - Evening

Post by Bear » Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:09 pm

I am in for Giro 2021 in the evening. 21:00 or 22:00...? Both ok for me. Maybe I miss some stages but try to be online every day.

The team will be with Wyn Masters and Matteo Pavoni. Also Tyler Medaglia and Emil Johansson are safe.

Who else will join the evening Giro?

I like your impatience Bear :) never too early to open a thread for the Giro - best GT of the year.

I am also in no matter what. Not planning to miss any days. Hope I can keep it that way.

Only goal this year is to go for GC and win 1-2 stages along the way.

Lineup is still open to changes. Main questions are:
- Can Rafael RuizCabal still be good enough for the Giro with then 36 years old?
- Would we find a replacement for him on transfer market or do we have to live with the weaknesses of the current team?

The rest of my lineup is pretty much settled in my head.

I am back to evening this year. The goals will be to win as many stages as possible.
The lineup for this Giro :
X1 Beauvue
X2 Addani
X3 Akagi
X4 Castex
X5 Hlosek
X6 Polnareff
X7 Rukawa
X8 Sakuragi
X9 Yepie Yepie

The only question is about Yepie Yepie. Possible I'll bring Nook or Milos instead, but chances are really low

My lineup will probably look like this:

#1 Luca de Marchi
#2 Felipe Vizcaino
#3 Taison Souza
#4 Alberto Urrutia
#5 Pedro Castello Ruiz
#6 Jhonatan Aguilar

Those 6 will be in Italy pretty much 100%

Candidates for the other 3 spots:
Rafael Ruiz Cabal - will actually be already 37 - not even 36 as I said before. Probably still my best classic though
Alejandro Betancur - low chances at the moment but you never know
Martin Roux - low chances, flat probably not that necessary
Lukas Wallnöfer - good chances
Daniele Marcolli - good chances as low cost option and flat rider
Tom Lombaerts - good chances, good reg and cheap
Rider x from transfer market

If we would start today the 3 open spots would be filled with RuizCabal, Marcolli and Lombaerts
Rodrigo Tellez - Winner of Tour Down Under 2023!!!

I most likely start here. 8-)

Line-up:
1. Djevat Trkman: 87 55 71 56 46 63Reg
2. Igo Jasnic: 50 82 74 55 45 59Reg
3. Ville Vikkolainen 68 81 70 49 65 54Reg
4. Kemajou Tshimpaka 51 81 78 49 47 53Reg
5. Ernesto Arboleda 74 80 78 60 46 53Reg
6. BacQuang Bong 62 86 74 48 55 49Reg
7. Yembe Elikia 54 72 67 58 84 48Reg
8. Andraz Krhin 71 75 65 46 71 41Reg

9: Haluttomuus Loipinen 68 78 79 49 45 35Reg -> not sure he will be there 35Reg could be quit useless in hard GIRO.

Djevat is strong, but he lacks a little support. Anyway he is our leader. Only Ernesto who is worse being called a helper for him. Let's see how strong the line-up of others is.

Lets shine some light on the evening edition of this year's Giro. I think the race definitely deserves a lot more attention as it is so far a pretty intense one.
We know that some guys - like the Donkey - can't follow the race much as it is so late.

GC is a big battle so far between several type of riders and teams. There are the pure climbers like deMarchi or Trkman, then several different combos of mountain/TT skill in riders like Melendez, Allenstein or Beauvue.

Trkman took the mountain training on 12th to become the best climber with the superior TT skill compared to the rest. However he was used twice as helper on a sprint stage. The first time on stage 3 he came away with it without any losses as the teams in front were not able to coordinate fast enough.
On stage 7 then it cost him over a minute in GC which opened up the race even more for the rest.
On stage 8 it was then Team Toto who took advantage of the hard day before and took 43 seconds compared to the rest of the GC favorites while Beauvue lost a minute+ where nobody expected him to lose that much.
Bana Hamawandi lost 10 seconds + bonis on stage 9 but is still in the lead of GC for now.

Current GC standing before stage 10 looks like the following:
1. Bana Hamawandi (maglia rosa)
3. Luca deMarchi +0:33
4. Gorka Melendez +0:37
5. Nelson Ondoa +0:47
8. Wyn Masters +1:01
9. Mbutu Agonago +1:01
10. Marlon Schubert +1:02
11. Hanamichi Sakuragi +1:18
12. Maximilian Allenstein +1:22
15. Djevat Trkman +1:41
18. Thierry Beauvue +1:58

Today looks like a rest day before the rest day but experience in this group so far is that it could also become a GC deciding stage out of nowhere.
Then after the rest day the stage to Montalcino will probably change up the GC once again and after it we might have a clearer view on the favorites for the maglia rosa.
Currently in the best position is probably Melendez with 84 mountain + 66 TT.

Stage 10: Djevat got 51sec back after following a late Falkenbier attack. So GC is quite close before the Strade Bianche stage. At this upcoming stage we will see who really wants to invest everything for GC and who he is the real leader of each team.

So much ups and downs in this tour. Was really angry that Trkman was able to take back so much time. I was not looking at the race for 2-3 minutes and there he goes... but probably the attack would have worked anyway even with me being there at that moment.
At first I thought it was a mistake but hanging on leso made more sense after looking at it after a night of sleep. It was just not to be expected that Trkman with the low flat would attack/follow there at that moment.

Seems like all the other GC teams do not really care. Toto not riding for the tour win just leaves his classic in front instead of helping Bana in the back. Same for Christie and the rest of the candidates.

So out of basically nothing Trkman is right back in the race and probably back to being the favorite at least until after the Strade Bianche stage.

+++ nice race

+ nice win from Wyn who should have some decent Wine this evening!

Well, Poke and Gala mostly created the action, but as I like to ride in the evening, watching today's race was nearly as much fun!

The problem for evening in terms of attention is really, that the replay is usually only available 2-3h, so evening teams can easily follow afternoon race, but afternoon teams can hardly follow evening race... The one and only real Giro of course remains the afternoon Giro, but with 15 teams, this evening version is great fun! Just needs more race reports and more managers reveal their tactic in this thread.

Strade Bianche stage to Montalcino

My most feared stage before the Giro. Marco deLuca last year would have loved this stage. Luca deMarchi this year not so much...

However in this evening group he was right up there with the other climbers and even a little better than Djevat Trkman.
The race started on the first gravel section with a sieb by Bear and Luca came out in front of Djevat by 1 second however this was not enough as obviously I was the only one interested to get rid of him. L RSV also has a good team for this kind of stage with good pave skills and in Arboleda a very good classic rider. I had no particular plan for this stage. The goal was just to survive and maybe gain a few seconds on Trkman if possible. B
The weaker teams as like Team Toto, Mapei and Continental with their leaders lost a lot of time on this stage and are out of GC. On the other hand I think Bear lost a good chance to win a lot of time on this stage. He tried to ride for the stage win with Tyler instead of pushing Wyn - who appears to have form on one of these middle stages.

Stage to Bagno di Romagna

Then yesterday's stage to Bagno di Romagna was the perfect example why tactics don't matter much in this tour. The plan was to attack early but Poke made the race hard from this first little speed bump of the stage. Trkman got isolated and was without a helper for nearly the rest of the stage. So big advantage for Luca and again one of those stages became a GC stage.
On the last hill then I decided to attack with Luca & Mbutu and not do a sec trick to make sure I wont block myself. Djevat was not able to follow but unfortunately Arboleda followed Mbutu and therefore didnt lose as much time as it was possible without an attack of Mbutu.
So at the end just 14 seconds + 6 seconds bonis of advantage on this stage. Not bad thanks to the help of strong Wyn Masters who got the stage win but could have been more I guess.

Advantage is now at 37 seconds with a disadvantage of 5 TT points against Djevat. Probably still not enough.

Leso also kept the Maglia rosa, damn!

Finance update: In negotiations with the Herner Mafia. Should be somewhere of -1.8 mil right now. I don't even want to count it.

Today: Rest day or is it?

Bosilj strikes again!

3rd stage win for the young sprint star. Very close end this time, as Yembe Elikia ignited the turbo on the last 50m. Tuttolomondo was again unlucky to not being able to have Bosiljs wheel. Would have bet on him today to win the sprint. Especially with the good control of Carrera Blue Jeans, that would have been deserved.

Like this, 150 points now for Bosilj. But with Causse, Beauvue and deMarchi all with more than 100 points, it looks not very good to bring it to Milano. Stage 7 really killed the chances for Ciclamino, when Trkman was in the sprinters group after the Galactical sieb... grrrr

So 2nd rest day nearly over. What happened since my last update?
Luca lost on Monte Zoncolan by 1 second to Trkman + Schubert. Thought he would be stronger since Trkman was without helper and did 2 kms of tempo alone. Seems he had form quite early. Probably even on this very Zoncolan stage?
The next day I was not watching and again following Ondoa so he won another 6 seconds with an attack on the last hill.
My advantage was down to 24 seconds by then. Definitely not enough before the last TT with 5 points less TT skill.

So the plan for the mountain stage to Cortina was again to make the race hard from the first mountain. Try to isolate Trkman fairly early. That worked just for some kms. It all came together again after the first climb. Just the gruppetto didn't come back due to Poke doing lots of tempo and subsequently a large group of riders didnt make the time limit.
From Fedaia on then it was just straight tempo with Vizcaino to have Trkman isolated as much as possible. That worked until Christie attacked with both his climbers on the Pordoi followed by Luca and Trkman. However the group did not work and was caught on the flat part towards Passo Giau.
Before we came to Passo Giau there was then another attack and Trkman suddenly didnt follow and was the lone climber left behind with 38 seconds.
On the Giau Luca himself then pulled the group up the mountain losing no more time to Trkman. He then received help by Ondoa who kept rosa once again. At the end Luca won 1:19 on Trkman and is now 1:43 ahead.
Poke finally won his stage in the sprint. With just 6 riders maybe he can calm down a little now :)

It is looking good now and I hope I can bring it home. The mountain stages should suit my team now.

Still hoping that I can add a stage win for Luca in these last days.

Luca wins the stage to Sega di Ala. As he is now in the position to "just" defend the maglia rosa the plan was simply to weaken Trkman enough to be able to follow him and win the stage that we were still missing in this Giro. So Vizcaino put on a hard tempo on the mountain before and the group was just caught on the flat part towards Sega di Ala.

On the last kms then again the same image as on the mountain stage before. Christie took over with his 85 mountain helper and eventually attacked with Schubert a few kms later on the steepest part of the climb. 2 kms later it was then Luca with the attack that just Trkman could follow.
Trkman tried to get rid of Luca in the last 3kms but today Luca was strong enough to follow every attack and then win the sprint easily.

Trkman got me under reg with the several attacks but nothing too serious for the long and mostly flat stage of today.

With the stage win in our hands now we can be relaxed about the last 2 mountain stages and see after today if we still have a chance for the ciclamino or maglia azzura if we try to go for the win.

The GIRO was fun. GW to Luca (Los Galacticos) and all other winners!

Djevat climbed on the podium with some luck in the end after his manager being offline last 3 stages and before that he better should have been offline to prevent a lot of mistakes. But doesn't matter, it was fun riding with such a bunch of climbers and strong teams.

It was really fun and it reminded me a little to my first Giro in 2010. Lots of climbers and good teams. Action almost every day. Mistakes here and there. You could never know who would be the favourite for GC the next day. Kind of dramatic in the end. This makes this game special.

This is the kind of suspens I like, that No-restday Giro was really funny, I feel empty now it is over.
The No Rest day TDF seems so far!
Anyway I am sad that the first week I didn't go fully for Sakuragi, it was hard to give up Beauvue
