Good bye Sven Becker, Ciao Severino Nicolosi...

Today, two riders left Team FL for retirement. With Sven Becker and Severino Nicolosi, Team FL not only loses good riders, but also two personalities that will be missed.

Sven Becker was also called Team FL's TGV, ICE or whatever but fast. He was the only rider the got into this dimensions of flatriding. The very exentric Liechtenstein rider could win one stage in his career and helped to create a lot more sprints for either Kämpfer or Dürr. He rode two Giros and many more races with full commitement to the Team's goals. Although he was still in a quite good shape, he decided to retire as long as he is healthy. He now will continue his career as technical assistant for the SBB.

Severino Nicolosi, son of calabrian Pizza baker, needed a long time to find his way in cycling. Always in the shadow of riders like Thuilliez or McKracken, he could outsmart them all in the end. With 5 victories, only the legendary Harald Mühlenberg has more career wins for Team FL (7). Like Sven Becker he was part of the Giro-Team FL two times. His Strength were not his Skills - everywhere above average but not really kicking - but his very fine tactical feeling for the right moment. Along with Jens Scholz he built a very competitive duo. After his career as a cyclist he will now take over Pizza Potenza in Vaduz, where also his final Party will take place tonight. Unfortunately not many Italians will attend, because they are still shocked by the performance of the Italian Football Nationalteam at the WC in South Africa.

Team FL with a short break

The next three weeks, Team FL management will be on holidays. So, the Team will have a short racing break till July. Until then, we hope that our riders train well. Furthermore, we may welcome a new rider in July, Mr. Chuck Bass, the son of a heave business man in New York who tries to escape his past. Hope he feels good in rainy Liechtenstein.

See you all in three weeks. And always remember: Have fun, look cool :)

Asian connections

As far as Europe and other parts of the world already are in a Team FL fever, the Liechtenstein cycling syndicate tries to go further by signing the Japanese rider Haruki Murakami for August 2010.

Haruki Murakami grew up in suburbs of Kyoto where he rode his bike already at the age of 4. After moving to Tokio he tried set a contract as a pro-cyclist which didn't work back then. So he earned his living money with writing and haven a jazz bar. Furthermore he is well known that he lets his imagination run wild which also was not really an advantage for a pro career. Anyway, the Team FL management signed him after watching him in several races and is sure, that he will be a good asset to the team. Entertaining and hard working - as the japanese disciplin he grew up with -, with good english skills he will help our leader to future success, hopefully.

Team FL between hope and Division 5

The latest news from Liechtenstein are not good ones. Team FL's last victroy happened two month ago and the team is on the edge to become a Division 5 nobody. Is there still hope?

At the beginin of the August season, Team FL found itself in division 4 on a relegation place to division 5, the noman' s land. Since the Giro 2010 and the Severino Nicolosi's retirement, the Liechtenstein cycling team has been searching for success but could not find it, yet. Significantly Nicolosi was also the rider with the latest win for Team FL, namely at July 14th.

In the after-Nicolosi-era, the new leaders like Dürr, Scholz, Bent missed their chances to put their names into the team's palmares. Especially Dürr, former U23-world champion seems to have a pretty unlucky time. So, what is it, that is missing? What is the reason for the bad times? Is it the management? Are the riders too bad? Or is it the combination of both?

Well, it is obvious that there is no real leader in the team rooster at the moment. No Nicolosi, Mühlenberg, Clavadetscher or Thuilliez. Even Dürr is just a wanna-be after he is grown up. Riders like Büchel or Beck would have the personality but not the class to be a teamleader. And the young ones like Garrido, Longo or Bass did not develop as expected.

But still, the management has no intention to give up. As long as there is hope, there will be a team. And although races like Hamburg or Plouay had to be cancelled, there are signs for brighter future. Some riders still have potential and there are races coming like the Pavé-Tour or one-day-classics that fit better to the team rooster. At least, there is enough money left to absorb the next retirements, like the ones of Scholz or Büchel. As the stereotype tells, this seems to be the (only?) constant value for Team FL.

Severino was really a good one, true true. But Dürr should have the potential to sometimes win? Or why not develop to a 100% breakaway team or something like that. Many riders truly are not world class and for that stronger breakaway riders than real captains.

The management will decide what happens to the team after the Pave Tour . Until then, every rider has a fair chance to improve his skills to a reasonable level.

Flandern winner leaves Team FL

After 149 races for Team FL, Jens Scholz retires from his racing career. The "De Ronde van Flaanderen" winner in 2010 makes space for younger riders like the french acquisition Frantz Granvorka, who will join Team FL in September.

Before April 2010, Jens Scholz has been known as helper for Nicolosi and winner of one very unimportant hilly race. But then came the Tour of Flandern 2010, where he surprised everybody when he won the sprint out of the final group. Even the Team FL management was surprised after looking for a Bent victory. Anyway, this was the day that made him famous all around Liechtenstein (thus not very far...). The always hard working German who was not gifted with much talent is today a respected man and an idol for the young cyclists in the team.

At the same time, Team FL found a young rider from Val-de-Marne in Fance. Frantz Granvorka will not be an adquat cover for the loss of Jens Scholz, but he will be a good asset to the team's philosophy of good overall riders, like Hannes Büchel (of course there is no comparison to Hannes Büchel!).

I liked him, good rider. And total outsider to win a race like Ronde van Vlaanderen. Outsider winners always good ;)

Don't think that Frantz is a good rider for the Ronde. But to buy a good spring 2011 rider will be a task after the Pavé Tour.

And of course also a fitting rider for the name Cédric Schmarotz has to be found :)

Büchel reaches 200!

Former record holder Tobias Mara (199 races) was the first to congratulate Hannes Büchel who reached 200 races for Team FL today.

Today was no ordinary day for Hannes Büchel. At the start he was already very excited and waited for the first chance to escape. No without a hidden agenda: He wanted to win his 200th race for Team FL. He was joined by Daniel Clavadetscher and his leng-term villain Wassissi Machoro. In the end, it was not the victory, but an important cornerstone in his career. He is now the alone record holder in the category most races for Team FL. Until today, it was the Austrian Tobias Mara with 199 races. He was also the first one who called Hannes, although he said: "Of course I wanted hold the record for a few more years, but if anybody should beat me, it's Hannes who deserved it the most."

A scandalous decision. The white slave masters strike again. I know Hannes, he wanted to continue riding, but his team manager, the same kind of person that brutally occupies my homeland, New Caledonia, forced him to retire. I spoke a lot with Hannes today during our race, we actually already talked about when our next escape together could happen. Not the pavétour we both thought, there we would just be support riders. So I can assure you that Hannes never thought about quitting cycling. He was forced by his ruthless manager. A real shame that people like that manager are allowed to take such decisions, that we riders never get any legal protection, no contracts to sign, nothing. Fuck RSF! And fuck FL!

Unproven accusations against Team FL management

Hannes Büchel's retirement raised a lot of questions, particularly in person of Wassissi Machoro, his New Caledonian racing companion during his career.

Machoro claims to know that Hannes Büchel was forced to quit cycling, that he did not do it by his own will. Team FL lawyers are currently checking means to sue Machoro for unproven accusations against the Liechtenstein racing team. Meanwhile, Büchel refuses to talk to journalists. Insider say, he got a lot of money to keep his mouth shut. Is it true what Machoro says? Everbody knows that his relationship to Büchel was not easy, although respectful. It always seemed he envied Büchel's success and his status in the cycling world of RSF. Nevertheless, the circumstances of Büchel's retirement are very ominous. For sure, the story won't end with this...

Former Team FL cracks Elmar and Marco still on the road sometimes

After they quit professional cycling, Marco Lippuner and Elmar Goop still ride their bikes sometimes, as the following news reports from Liechtenstein show:

Guus Nederlof lifts the curse

After three month, it is the Dutchman Guus Nederlof who ends the time without victory that seemed to be put on the Team FL like a curse. In the hilly pavé race Criterium de la Calle Sanchez, he won in the final sprint against Boris Stakanov from Team EXOCDS.

It was Severino Nicolosi who found his voice again first: "Che bella vittoria!" he shouted out loud, the man who was the last winner for Team FL before Guus Nederlof decided to beat everybody at the Criterium de la Calle Sanchez. Three month was the time that the Team FL management had to wait for another victory, three month after Nicolosi had won the very unfamous race from Oberwat to Köszeg. Furthermore, this race showed that Team FL is ready for the Tour des Pavés in October. "I am in a good shape and willing to put everything at stake to repeat that on cobblestone next month", said the happy winner after celebrating with his teammates, who made a good impression too. Not like other competitors, for example Iordan Duculescu from Petit Singe (former Robyklebt) who stroke a bad patch. Nederlof stated about his opponent: "I hope he is in better shape at the Tour des Pavés. Today I felt sorry for him." The Team FL management just hopes that this victory was not the last for the next three month again...

From Grand Duchy to Principality

Just in time for the Tour des Pavés, Team FL recruited 21 years old Gilles Braas from Luxemburg. He is supposed to be a helper for Nederlof and the likes of him, before he can be leader by himself next year.

He came the fastest way to Liechtenstein, over Strassbourg, Basel, Zurich, Sargans, right to Vaduz. Gilles Braas arrived in the night from Thursday to Friday at the Team FL Headquarter, with his bike. With lots of praise in advance he came to accept the inheritance that Nederlof, Bent and the other old pavé staff will leave after this year.

Bored in Walferdingen
Before he came to Liechtenstein, young Gilles grew up in the little town of Walferdingen, in the middle of the little country between Germany, Belgium and France. As one can imagine, there are not many opportunites left to do in your free time, so Gilles decided to use his bike and dicsover the surroundings. After a while, he joined the local cycling club, trained hard and well, got the attention of international scouts, especially while riding on cobblestones. Anyway, some people still think he is riding in a Luxemburg cycling team (no names will be mentioned), thus, there won't be much to do for a fast integration. As he told the local newspapers, Gilles is happy to join a major cycling team, especially in another small country, not far away from home.

But enough said, let's get to the facts:

Garrido does it like a Ferrari in FIAT-Town

The Team FL rider Garrido won the one-day-race Milano - Torino in a very convincing style, his first careerwin by the way. Thanks to a good teamwork, he could leave the other contestants behind him in the final sprint.

It was especially Tony Longo who believed in Pedro Garrido this day. The Italian said that the race fits Garrido's style to ride. Together with the Team FL cracks Nico Goop and Chuck Bass he ensured the best conditions for Garrido's sprintqualities in the end of the race.

After a busy beginnig, Colle di Superga decided the race
But before it came this far, it was a long distance to the Colle di Superga, the crux of the matter in this race. The beginning was chaotic, lots of teams tried they luck in an escape. Together with JPS Classics, Team FL could control this part competently. Finally after km 60 there was a littler group who got some minutes in front of the peloton. But the escape did not work well and so it was an easy task to catch them before the Colle di Superga. 'Til then, every Team FL rider did his job well and did his part to provide the best conditions for Garrido. And as hoped he could follow the strongest mountainriders. The rest is history.

Beautiful Tour des Pavés, strong Nederlof

Noblesse oblige. So does the Tour des Pavés for Team FL. Thus, as usual, the team from Liechtenstein participated successfully 5 days on cobblestones and almost won the tour by winning the last stage.

First things first. Every year, the team management tries to choose the best riders for the second most important tour in the RSF calender, after the Giro. This year's selection is one of the finest in the team's history. So, also the expectations have grown. With Guus Nederlof there is a true pavé specialist in the team, supported by strong riders like Bent, Goop and Garrido. But the most important part are the helpers, the handymans like Clavadetscher, Beck., Bass and the young Gilles Braas. DeWorde is just for the decoration (as seen after the tour...). Now the line-up a bit more visual:

Team FL Line-up

x3 Image Ronny Beck
x4 Image Mavolio Bent
x5 Image Gilles Braas
x6 Image Daniel Clavadetscher
x7 Image Pedro Garrido
x8 Image Nico Goop
x9 Image William deWorde

The goal was at least to make it real hard for the GC-favorites and if possible, to win a stage. Well, that's always a goal somehow, but this seemed to be realistic, although the competitors have been strong. There was Brad Bagu from ritchie sports with 85 pavé, Iordan Duculescu from Petit Singe, Craig Snowsill from Strohhutbande or Boris Stankanov from EXOCDS. Not to forget RS Walbeck with his two very strong flat riders.

Results:

Stage 1: Souvenir Matthias Dreher
Stage 1 was dominated by ritchie sports. He made very clear, that Bagu wanted to win this stage and so he did. Unfortunatly for him, his team lost a lot of power while doing everything do bring him in a good position. Team FL tried to save some energy and to be well placed for the GC. This happend with Nederlof's 5th place. Also Bent and Goop didn't lose very much time.

01. 00:00:00 Brad Bagu (ritchie-sport)
02. 00:00:02 Olimpiu Duculescu (Petit Singe)
03. 00:00:02 Craig Snowsill (Strohhutbande)
04. 00:00:02 Nicolas LaCroix (Samurais)
05. 00:00:02 Guus Nederlof (Team FL)

Stage 2: Souvenir Luiz Muchacho
The second stage was made for William deWorde and the likes. But perhaps it would have been better to rider for Garrido and get help from other teams. In the end, DeWorde won the sprint, but behind a group of four riders that escaped during the last pavé part. Again a 5th place but still good position for the GC.

01. 00:00:00 Mickael Crétien (Strohhutbande)
02. 00:00:00 Vitali Volosjuk (Falkenbier)
03. 00:00:00 Craig Snowsill (Strohhutbande)
04. 00:00:00 Hang Dilang (RS Walbeck)
05. 00:00:05 William deWorde (Team FL)

Stage 3: Souvenir Brian Coole
Stage 3 ended almost like a copy of stage 2. A Team FL rider won the sprint but there was somebody in front of the sprintgroup. This time it was Boris Stanakov. He almost got caught in the end but the GC-guys left it mostly to Garrido's Team who got second in the stage. At least he beat Volosjuk from Falkenbier, while everybody else tried to save the energy for Stage 4.

01. 00:00:00 Boris Stakanov (EXOCDS)
02. 00:00:05 Pedro Garrido (Team FL)
03. 00:00:05 Craig Snowsill (Strohhutbande)
04. 00:00:05 Vitali Volosjuk (Falkenbier)
05. 00:00:05 Uwe Baumgart (Team Ruhrgebiet)

Stage 4: Souvenir Mauro Monticulo
This was perhaps the stage the teams looked forward to the most. Lots of pavehills, very power consuming, perhaps hard for the GC-guys to keep up. Thus, it was the Team that tried a lucky shot who won the stage. Samurais escaped early with 4 riders and all the Teams in the Peloton did not care. No danger for the GC, so everybody decided not to waste energy for a stage win. Of course in the end it got hard again. Bagu tried it too and got 5th, while all the other GC-guys arrived at the same time.

01. 00:00:00 Nanami Nasawa (Samurais)
02. 00:00:00 Francais Benoit (Samurais)
03. 00:00:00 Herbert Zimmermann (Samurais)
04. 00:00:00 Theo Vogt (Samurais)
05. 00:19:17 Brad Bagu (ritchie-sport)

Stage 5: Souvenir Kuuno Kasendi
The last stage started with the question: How fit are the Teams after four days of hard stages on cobblestones? It showed that Team FL was quite fit, when Nederlof won the stage and almost did it in the GC too. Only 2 seconds gained more and it would have workes. But after the 5th stage it was Craig Snowsill who won the GC (and the points classement). Surprisingly Team FL won the team classement while Olimpiu Duculescu from Petit Singe won the young riders classement.

End result:

Mannschaftswertung: Team FL
Jungfahrertrikot: Olimpiu Duculescu (Petit Singe)
Sprinttrikot: Craig Snowsill (Strohhutbande)
01. 00:00:00 Craig Snowsill (Strohhutbande)
02. 00:00:02 Guus Nederlof (Team FL)
03. 00:00:08 Brad Bagu (ritchie-sport)
04. 00:00:10 Hung Doling (RS Walbeck)
05. 00:00:13 Boris Stakanov (EXOCDS)
06. 00:00:37 Iordan Duculescu (Petit Singe)
07. 00:00:50 Vitali Volosjuk (Falkenbier)
08. 00:01:07 Uwe Baumgart (Team Ruhrgebiet)
09. 00:01:07 Mavolio Bent (Team FL)

Bent it like Mastrangelo

As usual, a new month also requests for a new rider for Team FL. This time, it is the Apulian Angel Luigi Mastrangelo. The climber replaces Mavolio Bent, who decided to go back to England and open an own Bank with links to Liechtenstein.

In Liechtenstein, Luigi Mastrangelo continues the tradition of climbers made for one-day-races or try to win a stage in a tour. When the Team FL scout passed Mottola in Apulia, Italy, he saw this 20 year old rider on his bike and knew he was made for the Liechtenstein cycling team, although he might not be the smallest and lightest of all climbers with is 202 cm. Nevertheless, nomen est omen, he flew up the hills and mountains like an angel. And so, Team FL proudly presents, Luigi Mastrangelo, the future of Team FL climbing:

Dürr shows sign of life at the Gaelic Trophy

Everybody thought Dürr is a loser, that he can't win. He had the curse of being U23-World Champion. But now he showed a sign of life and won his third race in his career at the Gaelic Trophy.

Seven month and two days. That's the time it took Lorenz Dürr for his third victory. It was seven month full of self-reflection, self-doubt, crashed self-confidence, wetting his bed, erectile dysfunction, torture by his team mates. But now, everything is forgotten. After vomiting twice the night before, he made it. He won. Finally he beat all the other sprinters in a race, the third stage fo the Gaelic Trophy in Irland from Llanelli - Cardigan. Everybody was happy, although not everybody was present at the finish. Perhaps it was exactly this coincidence that took the unbearable pressure from Dürr's shoulders that the team management was absent and could only congratulate afterwards. Well, it is not important how Dürr made it. It's more important that he is alive again, hungry again for more...

What the fuck happend to Dürr?

Dürr surprised everybody again when winning the Plzen Grand Prix today. After his two stage wins at the Gaelic Trophy, everybody thought Dürr would go back to normal, which means being an unsuccesful winer.

Ronny Beck was standing next to his bike, almost letting it fall. He could not believe what has just happend. Dürr won his 3rd race in November, his 5th race overall. Team FL's perennial talent somehow seems to become a real sprinter in his thirties after all. Perhaps it begann at the Gaelic Trophy, when Dürr won two stages in a row and almost got the Points jersey. Anyway, Team FL hopes he keeps on winning and looks forward to the next sprintraces.

Team FL again with 14 riders

After nobody left Team FL in November and the Liechtenstein Cycling team is happy to welcome the young German Tim Hamberger, the FL equipe consists of 14 riders again.

Tim Hamberger, son of a skipper in Hamburg, joined Team FL at the 1st December. He will be trained mainly for flat riding, because the management thinks, the team's ability lacks a bit in that skill. So, now, Team FL has 14 riders again, ready for the new year to start. But before that, we try to finish 2010 properly and give Guus Nederlof and William deWorde, who will leave the Team most probably in the End of December, a "happy end". But before that, Team FL celebrates it's newest asset on the streets:

Grand Frantz!

In today's race from Bilbao to Pamplona the peloton slept and a group including Frantz Granvorka and Daniel Clavadetscher gained a lot of time. In the end, it was Granvorka who acted most cleverly and decided the race in a solo win.

At a certain time during the race, the gap between the leading group and the peloton was so huge, that there were conversation about the most variety of topics. Jodeling, Tits and many more. It seems that all the other riders got distracted by at least one of them and so Frantz, who is know for his very dense hair must have overheard it. Otherwise it can not be explained how he outsmarted all the others and won the race solo after an attack around 10 km before the finish. Anyway, Team FL is very happy to have its first victory in december, hopefully not the last one and many more in 2011.

New Year without Guus but with Hugo

With the end of the last year, Guus Nederlof left Team FL for retirement. Meanwhile, Hugo Marxer, a new Liechtenstein racing talent, joined the Equipe at the first day of 2011. Hopefully with a lot of training-luck in his bag.

At his arrival from the Netherlands, nobody thought about Guus to become a winning rider for Team FL. As a late buy, the team management didn't realize his potential on cobblestones at first. But after a while, he showed more and more good results, which ended in three career wins. His Highlights were for sure the second place and stage win during the Tour des Pavés 2010 as well as his classic win at Omloop 2010. Now, Guus went back to his hometown Utrecht, where he enjoys a quiet life and some serious smoking. We wish him good luck.

Shortly after Guus left the Team, at new years day, Hugo Marxer joined the Team FL cracks. Hugo grew up in Eschen, Liechtenstein, so he was used to ride around and up the "Eschnerberg" with his bike. Thus, also his skills are clearly focused on hilly terrain. Well, they should be in the future, after the hill-focused riders in the current line-up boycott the training... So, Hugo is our last hope, but no pressure, ok?
