May 2022

15.334 points (team record) and the 4th Division 1 win in 2022. (Former team Equipe Mathematique could achieve 15.336 points in 09/2012). But the team just starts on position 3 in June (1k points behind Team-Mojabahs and 120 behing Mangahns Mannen).

The month was dominated by 23 days of Giro but it started with a stage win in the final TT at Tour de Romandie for Trakhtenbrot. With the victory he could win the GC and the green jersey. After some less successfull one day races our team went to Italy to win the GIRO. The team around Boaz Trakhtenbrot (Taaramäe, Detreköi, Heuser, Tschermak, Hinton, Schötensack, Simony and Szabo) was fighting hard to bring Boaz into the Maglia Rosa and defend it until the very last day. He wore the leader jersey for 18 days and won the Giro with more than 30 s ahead of Toni Berg. Unfortunately it was the only thing we won at this years Giro (no stage and no other jersey/classification in reach). Another one day race win for Boaz at the 31st makes the decision very easy. Boaz rider of the month 05/2022 with the first ever GT victory of the team history (not even on podium before).

Transfer News
The first captain of the team rebuild, Franz Schwackhöfer, is leaving the team today at the age of 37. In his 146 races (18 wins, 5 GC wins, 1 additional podium, 2 green jerseys) he could collect 11.597 eternal points. His main terrain were hilly stage races with ITTs but he also could win some stages with his 60+ sprint (3rd place Amstel) and he was the motor of 4 TTT during his team leadership. Franz could win important stages at the Tour de France, Pais Vasco (in 2021 AND 2022), Tour de Romandie, Tour de Suisse, Paris-Nice, he whore the Maglia Rosa at the Giro, the yellow jersey at the Tour de France and many other leader jerseys, he could win the GC at the Tour de Pologne (Cat 3), Benelux (3), Algarve (3), Bourgogne, Volta a Rio, the green jersey at the Tour de Romandie and Benelux. With Trakhtenbrot claiming the leader position, the appearance of Franz in our squad decreased and he wasn't planned for Tour de Suisse so the resignement at this moment is logic.

With 11.597 eternal points, he is number 11. in the Austrian RSF history and he was leading the team statistics in eternal points until middle of this months GIRO when finally Boaz overtook him also in this statistic.

Image Franz Schwackhöfer

starting: 56-71-74-77-61 66,5 pave 44 reg
peak: 71-75-75-84-62

His training was great at the beginning, reaching 84 TT for such a rider is perfect, but the mountain training stuck after good start. So he never reached more than 71 and also had no classic support who trained better than him. That's also one reason he could never win a Cat4+ stage race.

After todays win of the first stage of the Tour de Suisse, Boaz Trakhtenbrot reached 15k eternal points. He is the first rider of Alive And Dead to achieve this milestone at the age of 33 (after 152 races). (Erwin Schrödinger reached 16.848 for Equipe Mathematique)

Trakhtenbrot first A&D rider to win 10th stage race

Boaz Trakhtenbrot is the first A&D rider who could win the GC at 10 stage races. He got 3rd at todays ITT at Tour de Suisse and won the GC with more than 1'30'' gap. He also won the points classement and is still carrying the RSF leader jersey (6.592 points). There are just 20 riders in the statistics to achieve 10 or more stage race wins, so it is another Milestone. Boaz could perform very well at the most important stage races, winning the GIRO (Cat 5), Paris Nimes, Tour de Romandie, Pais Vasco and Tour de Suisse (Cat 4).

But he didn't win Catalunya! So one missing and the Donkey is happy about it :D

But strong career, nothing to say. Just something to ask? Now getting tired of riding for him and winning a bit?

Yeah it's his main defeat. Well not really tired of winning, but the stage races are exhausting. Coordinating the weekends etc. and not really many active managers who could sit me for the 1-2 days a week I cannot race on my own. But won't complain. But will enjoy the first stage race without beeing in the top favorite position.

Jacob Wolfowitz retires

After 251 races, Jacob Wolfowitz finally retires. He was very successfull with 7 race wins. His best moments were around the start of the 2021 season were he could win some nice Belgian cobble races (Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Kuurne - Brüssel - Kuurne). His training was not that great never reaching 70 mountain. He was part of the Franz classic army and could go for his chances in some one day races and at the Tour de Pavés where he could finish on the podium and win the points jersey, after winning one stage and beeing in the leader jersey for a long time. He also had some big defeats, like the Montalcino stage at the 2021 Giro our team was really going for and finally lost against some Gipfelstuermer dude. He reached 6.203 eternal points.

June 2022

On vaccation for the last week of June, the team ended up on place 3 in Division 1 (11.464 points). Tour de Suisse was the main goal for June and Boaz Trakhtenbrot could win the GC, points classification and 2 stages there. Appart from that, no rider could win a race, we tried some one day races for Tesla, but he/the team was not ready to get him to the winning position.

So easy Boaz Trakhtenbrot rider of the month winning his 10th GC for A&D.

Transfers
Jacob Wolfowitz retired at the age of 39 (see post above).

A new 21 year old rider from Germany, Georg Ohm, signed a contract with A&D. He will be mainly a helper in flat and medium hilly terrain, mostly in one day races as he misses some reg.

Georg Ohm winning his first race

Some good news. Yesterday we did a comeback race after our 2 week vaccation and Georg Ohm achieved his first race win in his first race. As most A&D riders he went into an escape in his first race. Together with György Szabo he formed a two man groug and made tempo first. In a small peloton just Liberty Sartene was online and chased the group, but finally he was off to give us the minutes we needed. In the end György and Georg finished hand in hand. The official replay told us Georg won the race!

July 2022

On vaccation the first week of July, so missing the TdF. The side program was not very crowded and so we could win a lot of races. 11 wins in 21 races (2x Oetker incl. GP Cerami, 2x Trakhtenbrot incl. San Sebastian, 2x Hinton incl. Slag om Norg, 2x Tesla, 1x Heuser, 1x Ohm, 1x Faye). Boaz Trakhtenbrot winning a non competetive 3 teams San Sebastian were the team could get places 1-3. Ending up on rank 28 in Division 1 with 2.990 points and relegating to Division 2 the first time since the comeback.

Boaz Trakhtenbrot with stage wins 23 and 24 and with his first classic win in his last ever race is the rider of the month.

Transfers
A legend retires. Boaz Trakhtenbrot ended his carreer yesterday at the age of 34 years. He did 161 races for A&D mostly stage races and managed to win 10 GC (incl Giro, Paris Nimes, Tour de Romandie, Pais Vasco and Tour de Suisse), 24 races (incl. San Sebastian, stages at Tour de Romandie, Paris Nimes, Catalunya, Pais Vasco, Tour de Suisse), 4x points classement (incl. Tour de Romandie, Tour de Suisse), 2x youth classement (incl. Tour de France 2021). The only real thing that was missing was a stage win at a GT (he participated in TdF as young rider and Giro as top favorite). He could collect 16.609 eternal points.

Image Alo Taaramäe also retires, he was bought as a old climber to support Boaz winning the Giro and to support August Oetker in one day races. He did his duty without beeing in the sportlights himself. In his last race, he got 3rd at San Sebastian (behind his leaders Trakhtenbrot and Oetker).

The team decided to buy the 27 year old classic Image Jaswant Srivastav from india. He will complete our classic army for the comming months. His values are 72-80-74-56-46-72,8-65, he will be our leader in smaller hilly tours as well as a last helper for Tesla, he already did 13 races were he collected 78 eternal points.

Boaz a real AAD legend ! Congrats to a nice career !

Would have like to see him in the TdF or next in the Vuelta, but I guess the team is already looking to finance a 2023 leader :)

Transfer News

Yesterday the team completed the generation change. Two old riders August Oetker (34) and Otto Schötensack (35) resigned and a young climber talent Alessandro Volta (20) from Italy joined the team.

August Oetker was (except for the downhill weakness) a blueprint of A&D (D&A, Equipe Mathematique) 80-70 leaders. He started with max values for climbing & flat combination together with a high sprint value. His training was very good too. He reached a peak of 81-73 with 59 sprint. Unfortunately and unlike his predecessors, he never really was the team leader. For some months, he got Alo Taaramäe as a perfect helper and he could win a total of 12 races without a big highlight. He was leader at the Tour of the Alps, where he got second place in GK and winning a stage. In one of his last races, he gave the win at San Sebastian to Boaz Trakhtenbrot. In 123 races he collected 4.845 eternal points. In his first career half, he was the last helper on the mountains for Trakhtenbrot in his early stage race wins.

Image August (Dr.) Oetker, 34
123 races, 4.845 points, 12 wins
starting: 73-56-54-51-57-54,2 38reg
peak: 81-73 59 sprint

Otto Schötensack was a normal flat rider with a bit of mountain. He was there for controlling in stage races and one day races and also try some late attacks. He could win 2 of his 282 races collecting 1.754 points. He could also contribute to a late attack win of Faye in August. He is leaving the team in his peak. He was also one of the helpers at the GIRO win.

Image Otto Schötensack, 35
282 races, 1.754 points, 2 wins
starting: 21y, 46-72-77-52-52-66,6 40reg
peak: 54-87-77

We signed a new rider for the stage races next year. The young climber Alessandro Volta (20) from Como, Italy will join the team next month and should focus on his training in the first months. He should step into the big footsteps of Boaz Trakhtenbrot and brings everything he needs to do so.

Image Alessandro Volta, 20
Bought: 73-56-77-54-52-54,2-41 reg
Goal: 85-56-77 with 58TT or 85-60-77 or 80-70-77
Boaz Trakhtenbrot:
  • Winner Giro 2022
  • 10 GC wins
  • 16.609 Eternal Points

100k Eternal Points

Alive And Dead could reach the next milestone of 100k eternal points at todays 13th stage of Vuelta a Espana. It is tradition at A&D that such a Milestone is reached with a win (50k Karatzoglou won Agostoni) and so today Nikola Tesla won the sprint on hilly terrain. He could also end the defeat run of 34 GT stages without a win (Franz Schwackhöfer, Stage 20, TdF 2021).

Eternal Points: 100.431
Races: 718 (+305)
Wins: 128 (+85)
Wins in Classics: 6 (+3)
Stage Race Wins: 15 (+13)
Stage Race Podiums: 12 (+9)
Points Classifications: 13 (+8)
Mountain Classifications: 2 (+1)
Youth Rider Classifications: 4 (+0)
Team Classifications: 8 (+6)

(+ compared to last milestone of 50k points)

August 2022

Our team managed to promote to division 1 again after one month in division 2. We are back to Fahrstuhlteam after very successfull period of time (November 2021 - June 2022). Place 5 in division 2 with 3716 points without a real highlight. We were mainly riding one day races were all of our three sprinters could get one win (1x Faye, 1x Hinton, 1x Telsa). Than the team decided to ride the Vuelta a Espana, which was not planned at all while doing the form settings. We ended up in a group, were we had nothing really to lose, but the constellation was not good. Regarding sprint races, there was r QUICK with a way better sprint train (we learned that on day 2), Circle Cycle with the on paper strongest sprinter with good mountain skills, Merlier with rising sprint value during the first 2 trainings. For hilly stages (that are limited in terms of numbers) there was Atletico Lula with very good classics and pressure from behind from Circle Cycle. The climbers were also very hungry and the cooperation between Big Donkey and T-Mobile-A was fine to avoid chaos. To summarize, the first 11 stages were a disaster for our team. But we hope for a better continuation in September.

Our rider of the month for August 2022 is Moustapha Faye for winning the "Little Adria Cup". It was the nicest win with a late attack of Schötensack and Faye. Faye beat Pommeroy in a crazy sprint, were Faye went earlier than good for him, but Pommeroy hanging on the launcher Schötensack.

Retired: August Oetker, Otto Schötensack
New rider: Alessandro Volta (see earlier post)
Boaz Trakhtenbrot:
  • Winner Giro 2022

Geoffrey joins 10 wins club

Geoffrey Hinton could win todays one day race in Israel from a big A&D train. He won his 10 race at the age of 33 years after 232 races. That's just 15 races earlier as last years money sprinter Alexandros Karatzoglou. Let's see if Geoffrey can also top the 16 wins by Alexandros until the end of his career.

September 2021

The team got 8.060 points and finished on place 12 in Division 1. In total we could win 9 races with 6 different riders out of 29 races (3x Tesla, 2x Hinton, 1x Faye, 1x Srivastav, 1x Heuser, 1x Simony). The month started with a better Vuelta performance and 3 stage wins of all our classics and the mountain jersey for Srivastav. For the rest of the season we rode one day races and Hinton could win 2 flat stages with slightly uphill finish from our big train against very good sprinters. The highlight regarding one day race wins was the win of Tesla at the Italien semi-classic Agostoni. Together with his win at the Vuelta he is our rider of the month just slightly before Srivastav.

Transfers
At the last day of the youth rider market, the German Gabriel Fahrenheit signed a contract at A&D. He will support the team in hilly and mountain stages. We are not sure how to train him, as he has potential as a pave leader for hilly stages too.

Italian Automn

We would like to keep you informed about the teams performance at the classics and semi-classics in Italy. We try to ride as many of those races this year and want to win some. So here is the calender:

Image 29/09: Agostoni (Win Tesla)
Image 01/10: Giro dell Emilia (Win Tesla)
Image 02/10: Beghelli (4th Heuser)
Image 03/10: Bernocchi
Image 04/10: Tre Valli Varesine
Image 06/10: Piemonte
Image 08/10: Lombardia
Image 12/10: Giro del Veneto

Image Agostoni 19h
It was a small group, our team started with our captain Nikola Tesla and Heuser, Srivastav and Tschermak supporting him. Our team was in full control of the early escape and managed to catch the group all alone. In the end Ansach also worked for Mandler who was not dropped and together we managed an easy classic sprint. Mandler was hangin on Tesla and Ansach made a train of his helpers. Srivastav launched the sprint and could withstand the only other Ansach train long enough. No 6x sprinter from the Tesla train launched early, so Heuser could wait very long for his lead-out and Tesla won the sprint from 100m. First race and first win.

Image Giro dell Emilia 10h
Again a small group and unexpectatly A&D in the favorite role. Our line-up included Volta as the leader with Tesla, Heuser, Tschermak and Uexküll as helpers. Plan was keep all guys fit as long as possible and try some classics attacks. But there was no real climber team at the start, just FSG Sattelpupper with his young climber Hühnenreiter and Czech Lions with Splhac. Under these circumstances we changed our tactics and wanted to sieb the helpers of those 2 teams and try to go for Volta with a long helper advantage. But the tactic was overthrown early as Czech lions attacked with 2 riders and Liberty Sartene attacked with 3 riders. So I decided to go for my classics army. Kept the gap very close, didn't want to let Czech having a helper from the front after the second mountain. But failed with this tactic. Placka, a 60-80 guy was just nearly caught after hard siebs by Volta to drop all riders except for the Liberty classic Lucero and the climbers. A&D with 5 riders in front and Placka there to support the climbers. After some more tempo kms by Uexküll and Volta, the first classic attack with Heuser and Tschermak, Lucero at Heuser and Tesla/Uexküll following Lucero. So we had the classic group we wanted to form with all of our riders. Still Placka behind could have tried to keep the gap small enough and Hühnenreiter/Splhac could probably catch my riders if they cooperate well. But Czech decided to give up right away, the gap went to about 8mins, still riding with the weakened Uexküll. After some climbers attacks behind the win was safe for the classics group. But how to beat Lucero, he has more flat than Tesla and Tesla needed to fight somewhere on the second mountain. So trust Tesla and the helper advantage or go for another escape, it was 3 vs 1 so hard no not win it. After a double attack of Heuser and Tschermak we were pretty sure Lucerno is on Tschermak. So again attacked with Heuser and Tesla in the downhill and distanced Lucerno. Heuser stronger than Lucerno and an easy double win. Tesla with his second italian win and his first classic victoriy

Image Beghelli 22h
The team willing to get the tripple with Tesla. The small group included very active teams from km 1. Our team weakened from the days of tempo and a lineup mistake brought 2 weakened riders in the race. Not the best start in the race. Motor Trachenberge, olafscelts and waerl with early escape, Flaschbier also wanted to join but hard tempo there to avoid a too big group. Group was hard to control alone anyways, Loschmid started green but lost many seconds per km due his low energy at the start and low flat value. Wanted to put in Simony at ~8min gap, but missed it and started with 8:50. Probably the race deciding error. Simony won back 1-2 mins but 3 pullers in front with good flat values could ride very long. After a olafscelts sieb behind we increased the pace with Fahrenheit and our flat rider hope Fall. But the situation at that time was horrible. Group changed to blue with the leaders and cooperated well. Hoped for some earlier fights due to the big sprint advantage of Motor Trachenberges rider Henry Ory who had more than 10 sprint points advantage. Srivastav with the sieb on the 3rd last Zappolio passage helping Celsius who was pretty fit and planned for the flat. Before that Scottish Independence, RSV Flaschbier and later on waerl helped. waerls rider was dropped from the front group as the increased the pace to red, so there were 2 riders left. waerl with many siebs at the 7s early on, but never really leading to anything. Before the final sieb. The 2 man group had about 1:30. At that moment we had some hope to catch them back. Marius Kiabsky with another hard sieb. Heuser helping Tesla and starting to ride. 3 seconds in front of Tesla Motor Trachenberges classic Tom Morello was also riding. He lost 2 s in the -5 downhill and we hoped to catch him at the -2. But he defended his second and won back another one at the -1. So we put in Tesla for 2 kms hoping to save energy to get back time at the final kms. But it was not enough. Morello could keep Heuser and Tesla at the distance. In front the 2 man group finished 4 seconds in front of Morello. Easy win for Trachenberge with his sprint value, olafscelts just rode the whole way with him and in the end even alone (as Trachenberge had Morello behind). Was a nice race and we were defeated, but we hoped for a fight in the group.

Image 06/10: Piemonte (2nd Hinton)
Image 08/10: Lombardia
Image 12/10: Giro del Veneto

Image Bernocchi no start
There was no afternoon Bernocchi and therefore the team rode the Münsterland Giro without big success.

Image Tre Valli Varasine 15h
Tre Valli with a clear favorite in free team. Our team started with Volta, Heuser, Tesla and Uexküll. Plan was to keep everything fit and be in the right wheels to try to beat free teams monster classics from far. But we missed to hang Heuser on the one really interessting escape of Abbiati, Faber (both Gipfemstuermer), Drinkwater and Huizinga (both Big Donkey) 20km before the finish line. free team dropped all of my team at the last +8 and we never came close to the top group. In the end, due to last km attacks we managed to bring Tesla on the 10th rank. Worst of the italian races so far.

Image Piemonte 14h
Big group of 14 teams and a good mixture of hill sprinters, sprinters and flat dominant sprinters (Hinton, Frei). Unfortunately no early escape, everybody wanted to keep most of the riders fit. Than after half an hour, FL with 2 riders tried his luck. Gala responded and kept the riders close, preparing his farmer trick before the mountain of the day. 2 flat riders escaped and some teams hanging (T-Mobile and bergwerk), followed by a sieb of Galas classic. Gala group + Tesla in front, than at around 26 s T-Mobila-A and A&D former a second group around Merlier and Hinton and the sprinters at a big over 1 min behind the front group. Sprinter group decided to put in mass very early and looked very good to catch the front group from the start. the second group came very close to the front group before, but was than again distanced. In the end all groups reunited and Gala won the MS with his hill sprinter Alexis Larrain. Hinton got second from his wheel and is more than happy with this result.

Hinton joins 5k club after Piemonte

Geoffrey Hinton is in very good shape in the last weeks. He started winning in pure flat sprinters races due to his strong train. At Piemonte it was different, Geoffrey had the right instinct and finished 2nd in a comparable strong sprinter group. He broke through the 5k points boundary after 239 races at the age of 34. From all riders in the club, he needed the most races to get there.

Image 06/10: Piemonte (2nd Hinton)
Image 08/10: Lombardia (15th Volta)
Image 12/10: Giro del Veneto (Win Hinton)

Image Lombardia 10h
The morning the only time that we managed to be online in the final race stage, so we started. But there was no chance of a connection until 11:00. So our team was without helpers for 120km. We started with Volta/Srivastav/Tesla/Uexküll/Tschermak. As the manager finally arrived home, all our leaders lost more than 100 energy and all the helpers were in the group behind. not exactly what we hoped for. So Fall was riding in the back to catch back the leaders group were Alk took initiative. We managed to neutralize the race and hoped for some action at least. We were not in a position for the win at all, with very good climbers and 80/70 and very good classics in the group and the helperless time didn't increase our chances. At km 160 we attacked with Szabo and Ohm with 2 O Imperdor riders in our wheels and Kelme had the same idea on the same km with 2 riders attacking. So we had quit a nice group, but Alkworld kept the distance close to not enable O Imperdor to save to many helpers for the next mountains. At the Madonna del Ghisallo Ohm and the stronger O Imperdor rider did the tempo, dropping the others to survive the climb. In the back Alkworld attacked with Manrique and Lensa with 3 followers in the wheel. Hard reaction from (? hm who was it) brought all together at the top of the mountain. So the goal to save Ohm for the Ghisallo was successfull for the moment, but the last 10 Ohm was still siebed but could come back and attack again, this time as a puller for Uexküll. This time Bahrain Merida kept the gap close. On the next small climb before the Civiglio Volta and Srivastav attacked and caught up with Uexküll. Manrique and Lesna also attacked and the group worked well. Uexküll did the downhill, Manrique the flat part. But the peloton rode fast and on the Civiglio Equinox rode with Pena (climber) for Capelle (80-70) and caught the Volta group dropping Svrivastav and my last mini chance for a good place. So my guys just rode for place 15 in the end. In front Equinox threw away his chances with that early tempo. Capelle neither having downhill nor sprint was chanceles, he even attacked in the flat Capelle but all the climbers had no problem following him. So on the Como it was Melville and Munir attacking and Melville save 1s beeing better in the flat part and having more power, he won the race with 3s.

Image Giro del Veneto 14h
Afternoon Kaffeeklatsch with the usual suspects (Big Donkey with Rrurrumba, Gamboa, T-Mobile-A with Merlier, Gipfelstuermer for the escape). We decided to bring a team for Tesla/Hinton and go for it agains the sprinters (which was just one that time) instead of just keep the 3 men train fit as we prefer in ultra flat sprints. So we made clear early to hope for cooperation with Mobile. Szabo and one Mobile flat rider controlled the race until km 80 were the sieb of Rrurrumba was planned. After that good team work with Mobile, probably even to fast. Giving Donkey a slightly chance probably he drops Bradman and doesn't use him for attacks. The end was very well controlled by mostly Mobile and also Celsius and we managed to block a last Gip flat rider attempt. The sprint was than well controlled. Celsius->Tesla->Hinton. Nobody else trying so we could wait to launch Telsa until 200m. Gamboa also nice to block the Merlier wheel. Hinton from 100m and Merlier from 50. Hinton could win due to his power advantage.

Summary
Our biggest fail was at the most important race in Lombardia with just a 15th place for Volta. We blame the internet connection in the Waldviertel for that. Realistically a fit Volta could play a role for place 5-10. With the high number of classics, he could get some energy advantag or we could initiate some more chaos from far. But without beeing fit, those little chances even declined.
With 3 wins (2x Tesla including a classic win at Emilia and a 2nd place for Heuser there, 1x Hinton) we are very happy about our overall performance. Additionally Hinton could get a podium in Piemonte.
