Xaver Unsinn rider of the year 2012

One vote decided the Team FL rider of the year 2012 competition: While all other nominees got one vote each, Xaver Unsinn was the only one to get one vote more. Thus, the German classic rider is Team FL rider of the year 2012.

It's not Stefano Benni who won Lombardia and four other stages. It's not Gaudenz Taverna who won 10 stages and 3 stage races. And it's neither Team FL cult rider Stefan "King" Küng who ended his career at the end of 2012 nor the pavé specialist Kari Steinsson from Iceland. It's Xaver Unsinn who got the most votes and may be presented as Team FL rider of the year 2012! 7 stage wins and over 5'000 eternal points were enough to get that title. Xaver Unsinn, who was riding in East Africa when he read the news was excited of course: "Well, yes, I like it. But I think others would have deserved it too. Nevertheless, I am an old man compared with other riders like Benni. You have to take what you can get. Everything else is just nonsense."
I didn't mean to say it. But I meant what I said.

Good-bye Gaudenz

If he's from Schaffhausen, Solothurn or Graubünden, nobody really knows it. But Gaudenz Taverna, the Swiss time trialists, quits professional cycling at Team FL and starts watchmaker for the Swatch Group.

When Gaudenz Taverna started his career - thanks to Luigi Mastrangelo's Nonna Assunta - at Team FL, he was young and nobody knew what he was really able to. Now, 114 races, 5'361 eternal points, 10 stage wins and 3 stage race wins later we know. Gaudenz was one of the most successful riders at the Liechtenstein cycling team, always in struggle with time. The first time he showed his skills was at Paris - Nice last year, followed by his first stage race win at Bavaria. Three victorious time trials at the Tour de France later, he won his last stage race, the Tour de Moldova. Now that his active cycling career is over, Gaudenz will start his second professional life at the Swatch Group, significantly as a watchmaker. For that, Team FL whishes him good luck and a good time...

Benni does reparation in Down Under

During stage 2 of the Tour Down Under 2013, Team FL missed to offer the conditions for a stage win for Benni. Today, Benni showed that he is worth riding for him and won stage 3 in an outstanding manner, getting the green jersey and beeing in a good position in the GC.

The stage began as usual with the attack for the mountain points. But soon after that it was pretty clear that Deuseburger wanted to try something. This proved to be right when he attacked with Bergh and a supporting rider to get the first and maybe the second intermediary sprint. Clearly this was a copyright infringement of Stefano Benni's try during stage 1! Consequently Team FL, supported by Petit Singe, caught him shortly after the first sprint. The second sprint was covered by apish escapers. After all that, a normal race developped with the sprinter teams controlling in the pelOton agains a shy attacker from vagaderi. Finally in the end, Stefano Benni showed his strength and attacked 5 km before the finish, having only Sekiguchi able to follow him. In the end, Benni arrived together with the Japanese rider eight seconds in front of the Peloton, won the stage and could take over green from Lindner. In the GC, he is now more than half a minute in front of the climbers, but still more than one minute behind the escapees from stage two. But the team will try everything to bring him in a winning position during the next days.

Benni in Green again

Although Stefano Benni missed the Tour Down Under GC-victory by 10', he won the green jersey of the best rider in the points classement. This is his second win in this category in still young 2013 after the East African Tour.

Last stage race in January 2013 is over and again it was only a little effort more that cost the GC-victory. So, Stefano Benni was the runner-up in the GC, only 10 seconds behind the winner, mainly lost during stage 2. Rumour has it that Unsinn, who was denied to go for the GC, was doing his race in stage 5 in favour of Jean Ollé Ollé after talking to Hugo Marxer over team radio and thus being responsible for Benni's defeat. Which would have been nonsense of course. Nonsense, you understand... yep. Anyway, Stefano Benni was also lucky in the end when he won the points classement against the sprinters, his second one after the East African Tour in 2013. Which means that also Team FL is happy again. And now its' time to prepare the team for the spring classics and later for the Giro.

Everything the same but in green

Ollé Ollé won the 3rd stage at Besseges. In addition and good Team FL tradition at the moment, he is now also wearing the green jersey of the best rider in the points classement. In the meantime, Banzer had to give back white after he got 25 over night.

At least Ollé Ollé smile when he crossed the finish line first was not green, it was shiny white. Good old already 33 years old Jean Ollé Ollé celebrated his 7th race win in his career and is now leading the points classement, in the style of Stefano Benni who made green fashionable again for Team FL. A good start into the the new month with quite some highlights but mainly the one on the 23rd. Anyway, it seems that Besseges was a good choice so far, although the Team FL riders will not play a big role in the fight for the GC victory. But of course, they won't give up until it's done.

New sprinter at Team FL

Anyway, Ollé Ollé is not the youngest rider anymore with 33 years. Thus, Team FL hired a young sprinter from Austria, Joe Friesenbichler. Friesenbichler will be brought to professional cycling carefully but always able, to put some pressure to his always smiling team mate. Born in the Steiermark, he was a tip by Tobias Mara, former Team FL rider. Here are his stats:

Deia-Vu?

Xaver Unsinn wins the Trofeo Deia. Thanks to the help of Eddie Sixpence, the Team FL oldie can celebrate his 9th career victory.

Team FL's rider of the year 2012 is already 34 years old. No reason not to win races anymore. Xaver proved this to be true today at the Trofeo Deia, where he won his 9th race during his career. The crucial point during the race was his and Eddie Sixpence's attack at the end of the last climb up to the Puja Major. While the favorits in the peloton did not react quickly enough, Xaver, Eddie and their fellows managed it to arrive still with a little gap to the main group. In the final sprint, Xaver showed his strength and distanced the rest of the group, althoguh being one of the main workers to keep the main group away. It's Team FL's first victory in this (RSF/C4F-realted) young spanish race and thus is - contrary to other rumours - not a Deja-Vu, although it might get one next year.

Pogo in Togo

From Sokodé to Pya in Togo, Bennsinn demonstrated their skills another time. Benni won the race while Unsinn got third. Thats a Deja-Vu indeed.

After Samba in Uganda, there comes Pogo in Togo. Stefano Benni won the race from Sokodé to Pya with a late effort together with his older team mate Xaver Unsinn. "Bennsinn" demonstrated their skills on the last steep part of the race and attacked successfully. In the final sprint where only one other rider could follow, Benni outsmarted the only opponent left while Unsinn saved the third place easily. But lots of credit goes to Niels Hörnö and Walter Walch who preparated this victory with their earliy group together with two Dynamo Leinand riders. Benni und Unsinn both would have offered the chance for a victory to the two escapees, but in the end, the pace in the peloton was too high, although first there was no real collaboration among the teams left in the back. Now the team will head back home to Liechtenstein over the week-end and prepare for the Oman tour that starts on Monday. If the riders will participate at the NCs the team management is not sure yet.

Oh man!

While Bennsinn dominated the last one day races for Team FL, at the Tour Oman it were Jean Ollé Ollé and Roy Lichtenstein who made a point. With his two stage wins at the first and the last stage, Ollé Ollé framed Lichtenstein's victory in the youth classement and the win of the team classement.

Six stages in the Sultanate of Oman on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula next to Yemen (Yeah men!) ment it good with the Team FL. Maybe because Oman is a monarchy too, like Liechtenstein, in a different way of course (they have more sun and less rain). To the surprise of the team management, Jean Ollé Ollé seemed to be the strongest sprinter in the peloton and thus also "one" stage "won"(?). The next part of the tour was dominated by Polish riders Adameusz Rasczczcsinski, Mr. Gorski and Pawel Picaszowski. Then, the OC of the tour made a delicate decision: it changed the route of the last stage that, due to a technical mistake, was not the original wanted one. So, Ollé Ollé got another chance for a stage win while green got very unlikely. Contrary to the points classement, the youth classement was a sure thing for young Roy Lichtenstein, who showed his potential. Now it is up to him to show it in training too... So after all, Oman was worth a trip for the Liechtenstein cycling team before participating at the Ruta del Sol.

Benni the Sun King

At the Ruta del Sol, Stefano Benni missed the GC win by six seconds but won two stages and the points classement and thus the third time green in 2013. With the overall result, Team FL was standing again on the top of the C4F ranking.

Starting with the prologue as the first of four stage, the Ruta del Sol offered not much to gain for Team FL in the beginning. This changed very much with the upcoming hilly stages, and as it showed not only for the team's expectations but also in reality. It was Stefano "the Sun King" Benni who led the team to victory with winning stage two and three. With the time bonifications and a surprising twist at stage two against the hubers, he suddenly was only six seconds behind Bech from r Quick. Also Eddie Sixpence was doing great as helper and as second in the youth classement in the end. The last stage then was decided by an early group while Team FL wanted to fight for the GC chance. In the end, Bech was not to beat in the category while the points classement was clearly won by Benni.

Can't fucking believe it, one of the shittiest, stinkiest, most classless and idiotic teams of RSF will fucking win the D1. Fucking unbelievable. What the fuck has gone wrong with RSF? In the good old fucking times fucking class was needed to fucking win fucking races and the fucking D1, nowadays fucking Hugo Marxer is fucking enough. Fucking shit.

Ten for Ollé Ollé at La Drome Classic

At La Drome Classic, Ollé Ollé celebrated his 10th career victory. At the new French race, he won the sprint royal and is now only behind sprint legend Cédric Schmarotz in the list of the most race wins for Team FL

Jean Ollé Ollé's smile is famous. It's even more famous after a race win by the camerounian sprinter. Nine times he showed that special smile already. Mostly together with his team mate and close friend from Camroun, Henri Bienvenu, and of course together with the man that is responsible for his shiny teeth: Niels Hörnö. At La Drome Classic, it was the thenth time for Ollé Ollé. in the plain of Valence, he showed his special ability to decide difficult sprint races, even not being the best sprinter in the peloton. With this success, Jean is now in a row with Gaudnez Taverna, only being behind Cédric Schmarotz in the list of the most race wins for Team FL. The Swiss sprinter achieved 13 race wins in his career. The only thing that Schmarotz did not achieve was a victory at MSR. If Ollé Ollé will make that, he obviously will be the best sprinter ever for Team FL, so far.

After Drome comes Ardeche

Team FL continues being successful in southern France. After Ollé Ollé won the French classic race La Drome, Stefan Benni was first to cross the finish line at the Boucles du Sud Ardeche.

Alone he crossed the finish line, leaving all opponents behind him. Stefano Benni showed again that he is one of the big shots in cycling at the moments. Not only did he continue Team FL's winning strike in February, he also ensured the Liechtenstein cycling team the best chances to win the crown of Division 1. Thus it's also not suprising that Benni is No. 1 in italy and even No. 2 rider in the world ranking at the moment. And like Ollé Ollé, Benni made the first decade of race wins full with his victory at the Boucles du Sud Ardeche.

Hugo's masterpiece

Since 1 November 2012, Hugo Marxer has been in charge again for Team FL. Since then, success has been coming back to the Liechtenstein Cycling team, now most probably winning Division 1.

The lastest success was Jean Ollé Ollé's victory at Samyn, his 5th in February alone. But this are only half of the Team FL race wins. Four more are added by Stefano Benni and one by Xaver Unsinn, being 10 all in all for Team FL during this month. Besides that, Stefano Benni adds the points jersey at the Ruta del Sol as well as the second place in the GC. Roy Liechtenstein delievered the youth classement of the Oman tour, in which Team FL won the team classement as well.

Looking at this, it is not a surprise that Team FL will win Div. 1 for the first time most probably. Only a panic buy by another team can prevent that. Looking even deeper, this success is not surprising. The development of the team and it's tactics are connected to one name: Hugo Marxer. First beeing a rider for Team FL, he went to the Far East to work for the team Petit Singe before coming back to Liechtenstein to bring in his experience.

Will this developemnt continue? Nobody knows. But everybody who knows Hugo knows that it's not the last card he played in this game. Even tactics are named after him like the famous "Hugo Marxer", developped during the Tour de France 2011 by himself with the help of Luigi Mastrangelo and already used by different teams. Anyway, it seems that Team FL has been racing as good as never before. And even if it won't last, the team will enjoy it until the very end of it.

No Division 1 win is not a Schandfleck. Not even in quotation marks. Schandflecken are stuff like Langkawi stage wins or even worse, GC wins.

But congrats to Hugo! Damn Hugo, just too good.

Grande Stefano Benni wins MSR!

Stefano Benni did the Italian "Grand Slam": After Lombardia 2012 he won the second Italian monument: Milano - San Remo, La Primavera.

The race was hard. From the beginning the weather was bad and the riders suffered from this conditions. Hugo Marxer had anticipated that. Already during Saturday evening he instructed all nine riders what to do. "They were nervous, they thought it will be too hard. I told them that everything can go wrong anytime. But you still can fight and give your best. So everybody was confident that it's possible. Of course I knew it was possible. It was my plan. But the team had to believe in it", Hugo Marxer told after the race. He said further, that he had an even longer talk to the main riders, Jean Ollé Ollé and Stefano Benni. Both knew that it could be only one of them winning MSR. In the end, the circumstances and the race development decided the leader. Also that was included in Hugo Marxer's thoughts. It was the meticulous preparation that made Hugo Marxer sure about his tactics. Already during Paris - Nice he was investigating the course. Ever inch was examined, every little bump in the road noticed. Hugo Marxer was not nervous, when the race started. And he was right: in the end it paid off.

MSR would be his second monument after Lombardia 2012. Stefano Benni knew that. As an Italian, he was eager to do the double strike. Hugo Marxer told him how to do it. Stefano knew that he has the skills to do it. Just do it (thanks to our sponsors). "I was nervous the whole week. The bad results from Paris - Nice were still in my head. Jean (Ollé Ollé, editor's note) won Handzame and was in a great shape. Anyway, Hugo made me confident. The rest is history: This is why you're doing that shit, why you're torturing your body. I am happy". Before the race started, Benni looked at the team, esp. at his congenial classic partner Xaver Unsinn. Xaver just nodded. That was the sign. He knew he could do it.

Jean Ollé Ollé smiled during Hugo Marxer speech. He even smiled in his bed, imaging the next day, the race that could be his last big victory. Jean dreamt about the finish, about his successful sprint. When he woke up in the morning, he still smiled. Thanks to Niels Hörnö, his smile shined bright and infected the whole team. Jean was relaxed. At the break fast, he wished everybody good look and told Benni to win it if a sprint royal would not be possible. Fortunately, Benni obeyed. And Ollé Ollé smiled.

It's km 290 of the race. His old legs were like a lead weight, he had to breath heavily. He was still in the main group, around 20 secs in front of the sprinters group with Ollé Ollé. Xaver Unsinn remembered what Hugo Marxer told him the day before. He gave Benni the sign. From this points, Xaver could see his younger team mate only from behind. And he liked it. He saw how Benni led the group of four riders down the Poggio, he saw him sprinting. Finally he saw him winning. Stefano Benni did it. Stefano Benni won La Primavera, Milano - San Remo. Xaver's pain was irrelevenat at this moment. The weater was irrelevant at this moment. What a great day!
