The Vienna–Berlin long-distance cycling race took place from June 29th to 30th, 1893, and covered a distance of 582.5 kilometers. It was the most important German and Austrian road race before the First World War and initiated a cycling boom in these two countries.

... so what wiki says must not be true...but there must have been a lot of dirt on the track for us to have a short gravel tour.
